The Georgetown University women’s lacrosse squad upset the No. 19/20 Johns Hopkins Blue Jays (3-2), 15-14, Wednesday afternoon at Cooper Field. It was a big win for the Hoyas who improve to 3-1 on the season and will play their next five games at home including three against ranked opponents. “We played with a lot of character,” said Georgetown Head Coach Ricky Fried. “Hopkins coming off of a loss, they played really hard and I give them a lot of credit for their preparation and their ability to play at a high level. Our kids responded really well in a situation that they haven’t been in in a long time, and were able to come away with a win.” Junior midfielder Francesca Whitehurst (Baltimore, Md./Roland Park Country School) led the way with three goals and one assist for four points as well as six draw controls in the contest. She was followed by junior attacker Taylor Gebhardt (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker) and sophomore midfielder Natalia Lynch (Smithtown, N.Y./Smithtown West) who posted three goals apiece. Senior midfielder Hannah Seibel (Hanover, N.H./Hanover) managed one goal, one assist and six draw controls. Eight different players scored a goal in the game for the Blue & Gray. The Hoyas outshot the Blue Jays, 34-22, and pulled in 15 draw controls while allowing Hopkins 16. The Blue & Gray forced 20 Blue Jay turnovers, but committed 14 in the contest. GU was 7-of-12 on free position shots and junior goalkeeper Haelle Chomo (Naples, Fla./Barron Collier) took the win in the cage with seven saves on the afternoon. Hopkins struck in the first minute, but the Hoyas came right back and scored a quick three as Lynch, Gebhardt and Whitehurst made it 3-1 in a three-minute span. The Blue Jays answered right back with a pair of scores to tie the game at three at the 20:32 mark. Seibel took the pass off the draw and hit the post before the ball ricocheted into the net to put the Blue & Gray back on top as it would prove to be an offensive battle. Following a pair of Blue Jay goals, senior midfielder Rachel Rausa (Ambler, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham) nailed a free position goal at 14:37 to pull the Blue & Gray within one, 6-5. Gebhardt tied the game up minutes later with another goal off of a free position shot. Hopkins came right back with another, but it was Whitehurst tallying back-to-back free position goals as GU regained the lead. Sophomore attacker Emily Ehle (Baldwinsville, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy) managed her first with 7:58 remaining in the first half, but a late JHU goal made it 9-8 in favor of the Hoyas at the break. The Blue Jays tied the game up at nine less than a minute into the second half. But it was Gebhardt connecting on the free position as the Hoyas clung to a small advantage. At 23:06, sophomore attacker Michaela Bruno (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City) spun in front of the goal and fired to make it 11-9 for the Blue & Gray. Hopkins came back with a goal in the run of play, but back-to-back scores from graduate student Cristina McCarthy (Rockville, Md./Academy of the Holy Cross/James Madison) and Seibel gave GU its largest lead of the game to that point, 13-10. Bruno added another at 15:29 as the Blue & Gray looked to pull away. The furious pace of the offense slowed for the squads as both keepers came up with some big saves. Hopkins added a goal in the final 10 minutes, but it was Lynch who answered charging her way to the cage to make it 15-11. The Blue Jays attempted a comeback in the final five minutes of the game as the visitor managed a trio of goals to cut GU’s lead to one, 15-14, with 2:04 remaining. The defense stood strong and forced a turnover as Georgetown held on for the 15-14 victory. “The was an entire team win,” said Fried. “It wasn’t perfect, but we were able to overcome our own mistakes and come away with a quality victory.” Georgetown will continue its six-game homestand on Saturday as the squad hosts the University of Delaware Blue Hens at Cooper Field at 1 p.m. Live stats and a webcast featuring Monika Moore will be available at www.GUHoyas.com.
