Despite three goals and three draw controls from sophomore Alyssa Parrella, the Hofstra Women's Lacrosse team dropped a 15-6 decision to #23 Johns Hopkins on Saturday afternoon at Homewood Field. The Blue Jays pulled away in the second half after a tight first stanza saw the two teams separated by just two goals. Hofstra falls to 3-3 with the loss, while Johns Hopkins improved to 6-2 this season. After the Blue Jays scored the first two goals of the contest, Hofstra came storming back and led by sophomore Alexa Mattera the visitors scored two straight and five of the next six goals to make it a 5-3 Pride advantage with 5:39 left in the half. Mattera scored the first two during the run and then senior Drew Shapiro made it 3-3 and Parrella added a pair to push the Pride to the two-goal lead. Johns Hopkins would score four times in the final five-plus minutes of the half to recapture the lead and set themselves up for a strong second half. With the score 7-5 in favor of the Blue Jays to start the second half, Johns Hopkins would end any thoughts of a Hofstra upset bid as they scored the first five goals of the half to lead 12-5 with 13:03 left following a goal from Aurora Cordingley. Parrella would tally her third of the game less than a minute later but Hofstra was unable to get any closer as Johns Hopkins pulled away for the win. Junior Maddie Fields made 12 saves for Hofstra and added a team-best three ground balls. Mattera finished with two goals and four draw controls, while freshman Katie Whelan posted five draw controls for the Pride. Freshman Shannon Boyle had a pair of caused turnovers for Hofstra. Maggie Schneidereith had five points on four goals and one assist for Johns Hopkins, while Shannon Fitzgerald posted two goals and three assists. Haley Crosson had six ground balls for the Blue Jays. Hofstra is back in action next Friday when it hosts Dartmouth at 5 p.m. NOTES - Hofstra is now 2-6 all-time against Johns Hopkins. - Fields has totaled 41 saves over Hofstra's last three games with a career-high 16 against Maryland followed by 13 at Quinnipiac and 12 versus Johns Hopkins. - Parrella and Shapiro have now scored at least one goal in all six games this season. - Whelan posted five draw controls against a ranked team for the second consecutive time this season after accumulating that total against #2 Maryland on March 3.
