Senior captain Katie O’Donnell (West Chester, Pa.) fired home the golden goal in overtime to lift No. 18 Penn State past No. 22 Johns Hopkins, 13-12, in Big Ten Conference action this evening from Panzer Stadium. The win was the 100th in the career for head coach Missy Doherty while at Penn State as the Nittany Lions improve to 7-4 overall and 2-0 in the Big Ten with the victory while the Blue Jays fall to 7-4 on the year and 0-2 in conference action. Sophomore Maria Auth (Street, Md.) paced the offense with four goals while O’Donnell and chipped in three and junior Madison Carter (Davidsonville, Md.) added a pair for Penn State. Despite being down 2-0 just one minute into the contest after Hopkins scored back-to-back goals in just 13 seconds, Penn State used a 3-0 spurt in just 1:35 to grab the 3-2 lead after a free-position tally by Auth at the 26:00 mark of the opening half. Hopkins responded to tie the contest with a goal by Maggie Schneidereith just 46 seconds later, but the Nittany Lions used another 4-0 run with goals from freshman Quinn Nicolai (Moorestown, N.J.), O’Donnell, sophomore Kristin Roberto (Miller Place, N.Y.) and junior Kelly Daggett (Bainbridge, Pa.) to grab the 7-3 lead at the 9:21 mark. The teams then traded goals heading into the intermission with Penn State taking the 8-5 advantage into the locker room. Carter opened the second half scoring with her second of the game at the 28:45 mark and after a Scneidereith goal, O’Donnell fired in her second of the game at 27:37 for the 10-6 advantage. The Jays came racing back using a 4-0 run including a pair of goals from Schneidereith to tie the game at 10-10 at the 20:10 mark of the second half before Auth tilted the score back in favor of the hosts, 11-10, with her third of the game at the 18:59 mark. After Hopkins tied it again, it was Auth again who darted to the cage and fired home the go-ahead again time with just 6:50 remaining in regulation, but Schneidereith had the answer as she ripped in her fifth tally of the game for the 12-12 score at the 4:56 mark. The Nittany Lions caused a huge shot clock violation with under 10 seconds remaining in regulation to send the game into the extra session and Carter won the ensuing draw to set up O’Donnell’s heroics. Freshman Lucy Lowe (Cockeysville, Md.) improves to 5-4 on the year after registering a career-best 11 saves on the night. Penn State will now have nine days off before they return to action with a trip to Columbus to battle Ohio State on Saturday, March 31 at 12 p.m. NOTES Hopkins held the 33-29 edge in shots including the 24-22 margin in shots on target while also controlling the draw (15-11) and winning the groundball battle (16-15.) O’Donnell added a game-high five groundballs while also causing a pair of turnovers. Daggett and sophomore Hayley DeAgostine (West Chester, Pa.) also collected two caused turnovers each. Auth extends her goal-streak to 14 games and has now scored 20 goals in her last five games. O’Donnell extends her goal streak to 34 games while Carter has now gone 14-straight contests with at least one goal. Carter also moves into a tie with Laurie Gray ’84 for seventh on the Penn State all-time goals list with 153 for her career just one back of Sharon Duffey ’78 for sixth.
