No. 24-ranked Johns Hopkins used a 7-0 scoring run in the first half to propel itself to a 10-8 win over the University of Michigan women's lacrosse team on Sunday (April 8) inside U-M Lacrosse Stadium. Johns Hopkins (8-5, 1-3 B1G) erased a 3-0 Michigan lead by scoring seven straight goals over the final 21 minutes of the first half. Michigan (5-9, 1-3 B1G) jumped on top early by a 3-0 count behind two markers from Adriana Pendino, with the Wolverines allowing just a single shot in the first nine minutes of action. Momentum shifted quickly following a big save from Alli Kothari at the 21-minute mark. On that shot, JHU was awarded a free-position shot following a foul and Mackenzie Heldberg scored the first of her four goals in a 7-0 Blue Jays run as the visitors took a commanding lead into halftime. Three of the goals came after U-M was whistled for fouls to negate key saves or turnovers. The Wolverines did not help themselves by converting just one of four free position shot attempts in the half. Michigan ended its drought at the 26:01 mark of the second half, fittingly on a free-position shot, from Maggie Kane. The Wolverines struck again just 17 seconds later as Molly Garrett controlled the draw and found Caitlin Muir, who evaded two defenders for her first goal of the game to cut the deficit to 7-5. U-M hit the left pipe on its next shot and JHU answered on the other end as Shannon Fitzgerald threaded a behind-the-back pass to Maggie Schneidereith for an uncontested goal and an 8-5 lead. Following another JHU goal, the Blue Jays dealt a blow to U-M's comeback effort as Shannon Fitzgerald intercepted a pass from Maggie Handlan in the Wolverines' end, went to goal uncontested and deked a shot high before going low for a 10-5 advantage with 15:18 to play. Lilly Grass got U-M back on the board with her first goal of the game with 7:18 to play. Bianca Brueckner then found the back of the net twice, with 3:05 remaining and 45 seconds left to account for the final margin. Brueckner and Pendino led U-M with two goals piece while Kothari played well in goal with 10 saves. Heldberg led JHU with five goals and one assist. The Wolverines will continue Big Ten play when they travel to Piscataway, New Jersey, to take on the Rutgers Scarlet Knights on Thursday (April 12) at High Point Solutions Stadium. The matchup is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m., and it will be broadcast live on Big Ten Network and streamed online via BTN2Go (cable subscription required).
