A goal off of a restart with five seconds to play left the Manhattanville College men's lacrosse team stunned Tuesday afternoon as the Valiants fell to Fairleigh Dickinson University Florham Campus 13-12 in MAC Freedom action at GoValiants.com Field. It was once again a very cold and rainy day in Purchase, and the Valiants and Devils were caught in a thrilling contest late in the fourth quarter, entering the final stanza tied 9-9, with both squads vying for a spot in the MAC Freedom postseason. The Valiants took the lead in the fourth on a goal by senior Ed Motherway (Suffield, Conn./Suffield), but the Devils responded less than a minute later with a tying tally to make it 10-10 with 13:11 to play. Senior Andrew Murray (Yonkers, N.Y./Archbishop Stepinac) gave the Valiants the lead once again with his fifth goal of the game, and Manhattanville added to their lead with freshman T.J. Caccavo (Carlsbad, Calif./San Marcos)'s 19th goal of the season to go up 12-10 with 3:14 to play. The Devils were not about to give up on their season however, scoring just 38 seconds later to get within one, and using another tally 40 seconds later to even the score at 12-12. Manhattanville caused a key turnover with sophomore Sam Hahn (Briarcliff Manor, N.Y./Briarcliff) collecting a ground ball and giving the Valiants possession with 1:21 remaining. After a timeout, the Valiants chewed up nearly 40 seconds of clock before Murray fired a tough angle shot with 33 ticks remaining on the clock, but Devil goalkeeper Adam Reifer was able to influence the shot just enough to force Murray to miss wide right, and the Devils collected the loose ball and successfully cleared into the attacking zone, prompting a timeout with nine seconds to play. After the restart, Dalton Rimmer took the ball from the left wing to the top of the zone and fired a shot low past senior Zach Hoffman (Loudonville, N.Y./LaSalle Institute) to give FDU the win. Manhattanville trailed for much of the game, taking the lead for the first time on Motherway's goal in the fourth quarter. The Valiants outscored the Devils 6-3 in the third quarter to come from behind and tie the score 9-9 heading into the final frame before the crushing late goal gave the Devils the win. Murray finished the contest with five goals, needing just a single tally in the team's final game to reach the 100-goal mark for his career. Caccavo and fellow freshman Will Duval (Granite Bay, Calif./Granite Bay) added three goals apiece and Motherway and classmate Colin Morrissey (Shelton, Conn./St. Joseph) each found the back of the net once for the Valiants. Freshman Ryan Leonard (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Valley) added three assists on the day as well on the offensive end. Defensively, sophomore Soya Goto (Rye, N.Y./Rye) caused three turnovers in the contest and Hahn led the way with five ground balls. Hoffman stopped 14 shots on the day but suffered the loss, while Tom Tornetto and Reifer combined for ten saves, with Reifer earning the win. Manhattanville will close out its season on Saturday when the team travels to Pennsylvania to take on King's College with faceoff scheduled for 1:00 pm.
