Behind four goals from both junior attacker Abbey Brooks and sophomore midfielder Samantha Budd, Rutgers women's lacrosse (4-2, 0-0) churned out a 15-7 victory over Drexel (1-3, 0-0) Saturday afternoon at High Point Solutions Stadium. The Scarlet Knight defense allowed just three goals to the Dragons in the second half, as RU outscored its opponent, 9-3, in the final 30 minutes to secure its fourth win in its last five outings and second consecutive victory at home. Seniors Nicole Kopyta and Paige Paratore each contributed two goals, while senior captain Kerri Puckhaber, junior Allie Ferrara and redshirt sophomore Emily Santana each added a score in the win. Both Senior Bianca Dente and Junior Devon Kearns spit time in cage for the Scarlet Knights, with Kearns earning her fourth win of the season. The two combined for nine saves and allowed just seven goals. Brooks produced six points with four goals and two assists against Drexel, tying a career high for points in a single game. Budd's four goals marked the third time in her last four appearances that she had four or more goals in a game. "Not one of our best performances, but we found a way to win and we will always be proud of that," said head coach Laura Brand Sias. "There are a lot of solid things to learn from going into this next week." Rutgers started the game with a 3-0 run, as Brooks found Kopyta to give RU a 3-0 lead at the 23:18 mark. Drexel earned its first goal of the afternoon before Paratore buried an unassisted strike to extend RU's lead, 4-1, with 17:53 left in the half. Drexel would score three of the next four goals down the stretch in the half, but Brooks added her second of the game off an unassisted score to make it a 6-4 game at halftime. The score continued to be close, as Cassidy Delaney found Maggie Stetson to make it just 8-7 Rutgers. But the Scarlet Knights began to pull away courtesy of back-to-back unassisted goals from Puckhaber and Ferrara. Ferrara's score made it 10-7 with 13:49 left in the game, as RU proceeded to end the game on a 7-0 run. Budd added her third and fourth goals of the contest, Brooks punched in her fourth goal of the game at the 6:36 mark, and Santana drilled an unassisted score to make it 14-7 Scarlet Knights with less than six minutes left to play. Kopyta's goal of a free position attempt made it a 15-7 final. Rutgers returns to action on Saturday, March 10, when it hosts No. 7/5 James Madison for a 1 p.m. showdown at High Point Solutions Stadium.
