Sophomore Maria Auth (Street, Md.) turned in a career-high six goals and seven points to help lead No. 17 Penn State past Drexel, 22-9, in nonconference play during a chilly and snow filled afternoon from Panzer Stadium. Junior Madison Carter (Davidsonville, Md.) added four goals while classmate Delaney Muldoon (Silver Spring, Md.) registered her first career multi-goal game as she collected a pair of her own. Ten other Nittany Lions registered single tallies as 13 total Penn State players found the back of the night with 15 total players registering at least one point on the afternoon. Drexel (1-6) opened the scoring, marking the fourth time this season the opponent has gotten the early upper hand on PSU (5-3), as Caroline Cummings fired home her lone tally of the game at the 28:17 mark for the 1-0 lead. Penn State then scored seven of the next eight goals to grab the 7-2 advantage at the 20:06 mark. The streak was paced by Auth and Carter who scored two goals each while senior Maggie Gallagher (Bel Air, Md.), junior Kayla Brisolari (Crofton, Md.) and sophomore Katie Schluederberg (Elkridge, Md.) each added a goal of their own during the stretch. Karson Harris then fired home back-to-back free-position tallies for the Dragons who inched the score to 7-4 at the 19:25 mark of the first half, but that would be as close as the visitors would come as Auth sandwiched another goal between one each from sophomore Shannon Moore (West Chester, Pa.) and senior Shelby Wells (Timonium, Md.) to give the Nittany Lions the 10-4 lead at the 10:48 mark. Following a goal from Danielle Senour that cut the lead to 10-5 at the 9:37 mark, Penn State used an 8-0 bulge spanning the final nine minutes of the first half and the first nine of the second half to grab the 18-5 lead at the 21:12 mark of the final stanza. PSU hit running time with Auth’s final goal of the game to open the second half at the 28:16 mark and after freshman Sophia Triandafils (Wading River, N.Y.) tickled the twine with a free-position tally at the 21:12 mark, the Nittany Lions had their largest lead of the day. Drexel scored the next three goals over a five-minute span to cut the lead to 18-8, but Penn State used a 4-1 spurt to close the contest after junior Katie Garvey (West Chester, Pa.) fired home her first career goal at the 1:20 mark to secure the 22-9 victory. Freshman Lucy Lowe (Cockeysville, Md.) secured her third win of the season to move to 3-3 after stopping seven shots in the first half before being replaced by sophomore Madison Cunningham (Davie, Fla.) who collected five saves in the second half. Penn State opens Big Ten Conference play on the road this Saturday when they travel to Rutgers for a 12 p.m. contest. NOTES The Nittany Lions improve to 3-1 on the season when the opponent scores the first goal of the game and PSU is now 5-1 on the season when holding the halftime lead. Penn State outshot the visitors 38-24 including the eye-popping 35-21 advantage on target and also controlled the draws 18-15. Drexel held the slim 18-17 advantage in groundballs while each team went 3-for-7 on free-position shots. Paced by Brisolari, Gallagher and junior Kelly Daggett (Bainbridge, Pa.) with a pair of caused turnovers each, Penn State caused 11 miscues as the Dragons turned the ball over 14 times to just seven for the Nittany Lions. Carter and Auth each extend their goal streaks to 11 games while senior Katie O’Donnell (West Chester, Pa.) sees her multi-goal streak stopped at 15 games, but with a single goal she has now scored at least one goal in 30-straight contests.
