The Drexel women's lacrosse team could not dig itself out of an early hole and saw a spirited comeback effort run out of steam midway through the second half as the Dragons fell at No. 25 High Point on Wednesday afternoon, 21-10. Drexel gave up seven straight goals in the span of 9:20 early in the first half and, after pulling back within three with just over 16 minutes to play, allowed High Point to regroup with a back-breaking two goals in 26 seconds that started a game-ending eight-goal run. For the middle third of the game, the Dragons held their own and often looked like the better team against their third ranked foe of the season, but the lapses early and late were more than enough to do them in. Colleen Grady matched a personal best with four goals, adding two assists to lead the offensive attack for the Dragons (2-7). Karson Harris put together a hat trick after missing Drexel's last contest with an injury. Cassidy Delaney scored twice and Alex Beilman netted a goal to round out the scoring for the Dragons. Defensively, Rachel Warden caused six turnovers and won a pair of draw controls. Molly Savage had three caused turnovers with a team-best five draws and four ground balls. Lindsay Shettle caused a pair of turnovers, and Zoe Bennett came up with 13 saves. The Dragons dug themselves a big early hole that marred an otherwise solid first half. Drexel got on the board first just over two minutes into the game. Grady drove in from the right, then slammed a hard bounce pass through traffic just in front of the goal mouth to Cassidy Delaney, who one-timed it home. After a High Point equalizer, the Dragons had an opportunity to get back in front when Delaney took a free position attempt just to the left of the top of the eight-meter. Her shot beat High Point goalie Jill Rall, but clanged off the crossbar and back into the field of play. Just a few seconds later on the other end, the Panthers had better fortune as a shot from the right deflected off the far post and into the goal. In all, High Point would score seven straight before a free position goal by Grady got Drexel back on the board with 15:58 remaining in the opening half. That goal sparked a 3-0 Drexel spurt, all free positon goals, with Harris putting the next two home to make it a 7-4 game. Another Grady free positon with 3:09 remaining in the half made it 9-5 at the time before the Panthers tacked one on to take a 10-5 lead into the locker room. Drexel trailed 13-7 nearly 10 minutes into the second half when Grady netted her fourth of the afternoon, a third free position goal that started a three-goal Dragons run. Delaney followed with her second of the day, whipping it in from five meters out after Lucy Schneidereith fed her from the top of the circle with 19:06 to play. Three minutes later, Beilman made it a three-goal game when she streaked down the middle, taking a feed from Grady behind the net to score with 16:03 remaining. High Point had an answer, though. After a timeout, the Panthers scored twice in less than 30 seconds, then added six more as they controlled possession down the stretch and iced the game away. The road trip continues for Drexel on Friday when the Dragons visit East Carolina at noon. The Pirates are in their first season of Division I competition, and are just 2-10 overall but are coming off a victory last Saturday against Delaware State, a 16-2 victory over the Hornets.
