A big second half from the Hofstra Pride ultimately doomed the Drexel women's lacrosse team Sunday afternoon as the Dragons fell on Long Island, 13-11. The Dragons dropped to 3-10 (0-3 CAA), while Hofstra improved to 8-6 (2-2 CAA). Drexel jumped out to a 7-1 lead to open the first 20 minutes of the contest. Hofstra, however, stormed back, scoring nine of the next 10 goals in the game to take the lead and never look back. Karson Harris led the Dragons with four goals and an assist, while Maggie Stetson recorded a hat trick. Alex Beilman and Colleen Grady each finished with two goals apiece. Alexa Mattera and Alyssa Parrella each had four goals for the Pride. Grady opened the game's scoring at the 22:14 mark with an unassisted tally. Less than two minutes later, Harris notched her first of the day before scoring her second, this time on the free position, at 18:53. Then at 16:07, Stetson scored her first of the game to make it a 4-0 Dragons lead. After Mattera got the Pride on the board, the Dragons continued their run, beginning with Grady's second of the day and 29th of the season. With 12:35 remaining in the half, Harris scored her third of the afternoon just over two minutes before Beilman scored her first to give the Dragons a commanding 7-1 first-half lead. Hofstra did not back down, though, tallying the next three scores, first from Mattera before back-to-back goals from Drew Shapiro to halve the deficit with just over three minutes remaining. The Dragons would get one more before the half from the stick of Harris to take an 8-4 lead into the break. For as hot as the Drexel offense was, goalkeeper Zoe Bennett may have been even hotter, making eight of her 14 saves in the first half to hold a potent Hofstra offense to four goals. Hofstra dominated the opening 16 minutes of the second half, scoring the first seven goals of the period to take the lead. Parrella, the Pride's leading scorer, scored her first of four second-half goals less than three and a half minutes into the half off the free position, before finding Mary Kate Gerety on the man-up 78 seconds later. After Parrella notched another at 21:58, Mattera scored just 56 seconds later to tie the game at 8-8. The Pride run continued with scores from Katie Whelan, Mattera and Parrella over the next seven minutes as Hofstra took an 11-8 advantage with just over 14 minutes remaining. The Dragons chipped their way back into it, as Stetson scored twice, at 9:56 and 7:07, to stop the bleeding and bring Drexel back within one goal. However, Hofstra answered with two more goals to push its lead back to three with a second goal from Whelan and another from Parrella, her 45th of the season. With less than 90 seconds to play, the Dragons got a man-up score as Harris found Beilman, but it would be too little too late as the clock hit zeros with the score 13-11 in Hofstra's favor. The Pride led the Dragons in shots, 33-30. Hofstra put 27 of those shots on goal. Both sides scored three times on free-position attempts. Drexel controlled 14 draws. Drexel returns home two more conference games beginning Friday night against William & Mary before hosting Elon for Senior Day on Sunday afternoon.
