Princeton, NJ – Josh Byrne tallied three goals and two assists and Alex Moeser and Jimmy Yanes each added two goals to lead the Hofstra Pride to a 10-8 victory over the Princeton Tigers at Class of '52 Stadium Saturday afternoon. The Pride improved to 2-0 on the season while Princeton slips to 2-1. Byrne, a senior from British Columbia, posted his second consecutive game with five points or more with his three goals and two assists. Freshman Ryan Tierney added a goal and two assists while Moeser, a junior, and Yanes, a freshman, each dented the twine for two goals. Junior Jack Concannon recorded 10 saves in the Pride cage for his second victory. Princeton was led by freshman Michael Sowers with three goals and one assist, senior Zach Currier with one goal and two assists and classmate Adam Hardej with two goals. Senior Gavin McBride added a goal and an assist for the Tigers. Junior goalie Tyler Blaisdell made 16 saves including nine in the second half to help the Princeton comeback. Hofstra got on the scoreboard first 7:18 into the first quarter when Tierney scored an unassisted tally off a restart at midfield. It was Tierney's fourth goal of the year and the second consecutive game that he has opened the scoring. The Tigers tied the contest a little more than two minutes later when sophomore Charlie Durbin scored from in the middle of the box. But the Pride took a 2-1 lead just two seconds from the end of the first quarter as Byrne ran across the middle of the box and fired a bullet past Blaisdell. The Tiger goalie had five saves in the quarter but the Pride outshot the Tigers, 8-5 and picked up nine ground balls to five for the Tigers. Hofstra extended the lead to 4-1 by halftime with two goals by Moeser in the second quarter. The Pride made it 3-1 with 5:52 to play on a man-up goal off a pass from Byrne to the crease. Just 1:20 later, Moeser took a pass from Tierney behind the cage and fired a shot from 13 yards out for his third goal of the season. Concannon made five saves in the period. The two teams split the four goals in the third quarter as junior Brendan Kavanagh opened the scoring in the second half off a pass from Byrne just 4:37 into the period for a 5-1 lead. But Princeton responded with consecutive goals by Currier, on the man-up, and Hardej just 47 seconds apart to close the gap to 5-3. But Byrne added his second of the game just 1:57 before the end of the period for a 6-3 lead after three quarters. The fourth quarter was a flurry of scoring as the Tigers closed the gap with consecutive goals by Sowers in the first 2:29 of the period to close to within one at 6-5. Hofstra freshman Kyle Gallagher, who won 13 of 21 face-offs on the day, scored his first of his career right off the face-off before Hardej scored off a bounce shot just 54 seconds later. Yanes tallied his first of the year for Hofstra at the 9:58 mark and Princeton's Gavin McBride scored from Sowers at the 7:26 mark as the Tigers closed to within one at 8-7. But Yanes netted his second of the game at the 5:46 mark and Byrne notched his second consecutive hat-trick with 1:46 to play to give Hofstra a 10-7 advantage. Sowers would add an unassisted goal just 25 seconds later but that was as close as the Tigers would get as the Pride posted the 10-8 win. Hofstra returns to action on Tuesday, February 28 when the Pride return home to host the Highlanders of New Jersey Institute of Technology at James M. Shuart Stadium. Game time is 7 p.m.
