NORFOLK – The Marquette University women's lacrosse team came out firing on all cylinders against Old Dominion to come out with a 17-7 win last Saturday morning at the L.R. Hill Sports Complex. The Golden Eagles broke a slew of records. Senior Grace Gabriel poured in four goals on seven shots, caused three turnovers and scooped up three ground balls. Her first ground ball recovery moved her to the No. 3 all-time spot in the MU record books for ground balls. Gabriel's three forced turnovers have also moved her up the list to No. 5 all-time in the Marquette records. Cate Soccodato tallied four assists on the day, her second assist moving her to No. 2 in the Marquette books, and her third point of the day shifting her to the fifth spot in all-time points scored at MU. Julianna Horning, with six saves to secure the win, has become the No. 1 all-time leader for wins at Marquette. Her overall record for the Golden Eagles improves to 19-20-0 in her two seasons after the victory against the Monarchs. Horning also collected two ground balls, securing her spot at No. 5 all time for ground balls. Megan Menzuber also greatly contributed to the win, finding the back of the net on four occasions to keep the advantage for Marquette. Marquette held the edge after breaking a 1-1 tie at 25:35 in the first half, on a free position goal from Shea Garcia. The Golden Eagles would retain the lead for the remainder of the game; Old Dominion not getting on the board again until the score was 5-2 with 10 minutes remaining in the first half. Marquette would lead a 7-3 run in the second half to finish at 17-7. Marquette outshot Old Dominion 26 shots on goal to 13 on the day, and forced 15 more turnovers than the Monarchs. ODU keeper and grad student Haleigh Wurtzel registered nine saves to go, and junior Glory Johnson clocked two goals for their effort. The Golden Eagles will travel to Denver, Colorado next Friday, April 19 to face off against Denver University at 8 p.m. CT.
