Greenville, S.C. – Behind five points from Sophie Brennan (three goals, two assists) and four assists from Abby Shields, Furman downed Mercer, 13-11, on Sunday afternoon. The win moves the Paladins to 6-6 on the year, 1-0 in SoCon play, while the loss drops the Bears to 6-7, 3-1 in SoCon play.
Brennan tied for the game-high with five points and added a team-high five draws, while Kyra LaMotte added three goals. Grace Pollak and Sydney Catts each added two goals, while Hannah Demis tallied a goal and two assists. Courtney Baker tallied 13 saves and the Paladins won 16 draws to the Bears' nine.
Mercer took a 2-1 lead in the game's first three minutes, but Furman responded with four-straight goals to take a 5-2 lead with 14:11 remaining in the first half. The Bears cut the lead to two with 13:10 to go, before both teams played strong defense for the next nine minutes of game time. Furman broke the scoreless drought on a score by Kyra LaMotte with 4:40 left in the half to push the lead to 6-3. Mercer ended the half with back-to-back scores to cut the lead to 6-5 heading into halftime.
Mercer continued its scoring run to open the second, netting three-straight goals to regain the lead for the first time since it was 2-1. The Paladins responded with back-to-back goals by Brennan and Pollak to tie the game at eight, before Mercer's Hailey Rhatigan scored to give the Bears a 9-8 advantage with 22:49 to go. Furman responded with three-straight goals to take the lead and stretch it back to two with just under 17:00 to go, before the Bears cut it to one at 11-10. Furman responded with back-to-back goals to take a 13-10 lead, before Mercer cut the lead to one with just under 2:00 to go. The Paladins held the Bears off the board for the remainder of the game, holding on for the 13-11 victory.
Furman is back in action on April 12, heading to Michigan to take on Detroit Mercy in a 3:00 p.m. contest.
