ANNAPOLIS, Md.—Junior midfielder Annalise Heyward, who entered the game with no career points, scored three times in less than two minutes, while junior midfielder Kayla Harris scored the game-winner with 3:37 remaining as #13 Navy (1-1) rallied for five goals in two minutes and 30 seconds to stun St. Joseph's (0-2), 12-11, at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium on Sunday afternoon. This is the second-straight year that Navy has had to rally to beat St. Joe's. Last year, Navy trailed 11-10 before scoring the final six goals of the game. "This was our home opener and we were psyched to play at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium. We ran into a tough St. Joe's team and you have to give them credit for pushing us all the way to the limit," said Navy head coach Cindy Timchal. "It was a great team victory. The big message from today was our perseverance, believing in each other and playing tough to the very end." Heyward finished the day with six points scoring four goals and handing out two assists while adding a ground ball, four draw controls and causing three turnovers. Harris added three goals, four ground balls, six draw controls and a caused turnover. Senior goalie Gab Harchelroad, making just her third-career start, was sensational coming up with nine saves, three caused turnovers and tying a school record with eight ground balls. "I was a defensive middie last year and coming into this year I knew I had to be a threat on offense as well," said Heyward. "I didn't do much in the first half, but opportunities opened up for me several times on the wing in the second half and my confidence started to grow after each goal." Navy led St. Joseph's 6-5 at the half, but the Hawks scored the first three goals and six of the first seven in the second half to take a commanding 11-7 lead on an Olivia Little goal with 7:18 left. After a Navy timeout, St. Joe's won the ensuing draw control but eight seconds later Heyward caused a turnover and Harris picked up the ground ball. Heyward would score her second goal of the day 63 seconds later to cut the St. Joe's lead to three at 11-8 with 6:07 left. That goal by Heyward seemed to spark the Mids as Navy would win the next five draw controls. Andie O'Sullivan started off the draw control dominance by picking up the loose ball and freshman Moriah Snyder would score her first career goal off the first career assist by freshman Reagan Roelofs 31 seconds later to make it 11-9 with 5:36 left. Harris would win the ensuing draw control and 26 seconds later it was Heyward again to make the score 11-10 and momentum had clearly swung to Navy's side. O'Sullivan won Navy's third-straight draw control and 1:02 later Heyward buried her fourth goal of the game and third in under two minutes to tie the game at 11 as the Navy fans went wild. Navy won its fourth straight draw control, this time it was Heyward coming up with the loose ball, and 31 seconds later Navy took the lead on Harris' goal off an assist from Kelly Larkin. "I don't look at the score at all, I like to try and stay in the moment and not feel pressure," said Harris. "I didn't even know it was the game-winning goal, I just knew we had a wave of momentum going. I love it when Kelly Larkin passes me the ball, I don't even have to try and catch it, she throws it in your stick and all you have to do is finish." O'Sullivan won the draw control again for the Mids, but a Harris turnover gave St. Joe's one final chance to tie the game, but the Navy defense blocked two shots, including one by Natalie Irwin that was picked up by Harris with 39 seconds left and Navy was able to run out the clock for the thrilling victory. Navy ended up winning 16 of the 25 draw controls and forced St. Joe's into 19 turnovers. St. Joe's goalie Corinne Buttner was fantastic in defeat coming up with 16 saves. "We are here to coach up the players, but it's a players game and they are the ones that made the decision to buckle down as a team and play for each other and win the game," said Timchal. "We have a younger team this year, but they have a conviction about them and they want to top last year's team. It may not look good early on, but we will go back and work together and have great practices." "This team never stop fighting," said Harris. "You feel the fighting spirit and the energy on this team and you just want to rise to that energy. We play for each other. I will do whatever it takes to help this team out." The Mids will take on Towson (0-2) next Saturday at 3 PM at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium as part of a big doubleheader with the men's lacrosse team. The Navy men take on Maryland at 12 noon.
