The Central Connecticut women's lacrosse team dropped to 1-3 overall with a 16-4 home loss to New Hampshire on Friday afternoon. New Hampshire improves to 4-1 overall with the win. Central returns to action on Wednesday, March 6 at home vs. Manhattan at 4 p.m. Four Blue Devils scored in the game. Junior Morgan Sinton led the offense with a goal and an assist. Sophomore Carrisa Brown, junior Molly Coogan and sophomore Emma Sullivan each posted a goal for the Blue Devils in the loss. The Wildcats, who led 10-3 at the half, were led by Catherine Sexton who had five goal, Abby Cranney who had three goals, and Rylee Leonard, Michele Smith and Devan Miller who all scored twice. Senior Jackie Branthover made 12 saves in goal for the Blue Devils in the loss. Central returns to action next week, hosting Manhattan in their second straight home game. The Blue Devils will also be at home vs. Presbyterian on March 14 at 4 p.m. The Central Connecticut women's lacrosse team dropped to 1-2 overall on the season with a 16-6 road loss at Niagara on Saturday. Junior Morgan Sinton led the Central offense with a pair of goals in the game. Senior Jackie Branthover made 11 saves in goal for the visitors. The Purple Eagles climbed out to a 7-0 lead in the first half, holding the Blue Devils without a goal until the 7:51 mark of the first half. Sinton stopped the run with her first goal of the game, making it 7-1. They scored three of the final four goals of the half and cut the lead to 8-3 at the break. Sinton scored her second, and sophomore Carrisa Brown scored her second of the season. Branthover stopped nine first half shots for the Blue Devils. In the second half the Purple Eagles scored three straight to build an 11-3 lead with 27:21 to play. Goals from freshman Jessica Denike and senior Carson Adelberger cut the Niagara lead to 12-5 with 23:09 left. Niagara answered again, and ended the game scoring four of the last five goals to build the 16-6 lead. Rachel MacCheyne and Caroline Crump each ended the game with five goals for Niagara, who is now 3-0 on the season. Shea Swartwout added two goals and two assists in the win. The Central Connecticut women's lacrosse team earned its first win of the season, 11-8, at Hartford on Wednesday. CCSU head coach Betsy Vendel earned her first career win with the victory and Central improves to 1-1 on the year. Senior Carson Adelberger led the Blue Devils with five goals. Central travels to Niagara on Saturday at 1 p.m. Hartford scored the opening two goals before CCSU came back with four unanswered scores to take a 4-2 lead. Senior Carson Adelberger scored on each end of the run, while freshman Jessica Denike and sophomore Kaitlyn Rapp added goals in between. Following a Hawks score, Denike and freshman Raphaela DaSilva scored for the Blue Devils before halftime to make it 6-3 at the intermission. On the other side of halftime, Adelberger and junior Morgan Sinton scored two early CCSU goals to extend the lead to 8-3. After a Hartford score, junior Molly Coogan and Adelberger each recorded goals to pad Central's lead at 10-4. Hartford would mount a rally, scoring back-to-back goals to make it 10-6 with 5:53 to play. Adelberger scored with 2:51 remaining to push the CCSU lead back to five goals. Hartford add two goals in the final minutes for the final margin. Adelberger led CCSU with five goals, while Denike added a pair of scores. Sinton had three assists and a goal, while Rapp added a pair of assists and a goal. Senior Jackie Branthover made eight saves for the Blue Devils in the win. Sophomore Olivia Prizzi had six groundballs and caused three turnovers. Eight different Hawks scored goals, while Billy McLaughlin had a goal and three assists. Emma Privitera made 16 saves. The Blue Devils are back in action on Saturday when they travel to Niagara for a 1 p.m. start. The Central Connecticut women's lacrosse team dropped its season opener on the road at Holy Cross on Saturday, 20-3, to fall to 0-1 on the season. Three different Blue Devils scored in the game, while senior goalkeeper Jackie Branthover made 16 saves in goal in the loss. Central returns to action on Wednesday at Hartford at 3 p.m. Branthover's 16 saves in the game move her to 426 in her career, just 26 shy of moving into third place on the Blue Devils' all-time list. She made 10 saves in the first half, and six in the second on Saturday. Junior Molly Coogan, sophomore Carrisa Brown and freshman Jessica Denike each scored for the Blue Devils in the game. The goal from Denike was the first of her career. Junior Morgan Sinton added an assist. Holy Cross was led by Keely Connors who had five goals and one assist in the win for the Crusaders, who are now 1-1. A pair of goalkeepers combined for three saves. The Blue Devils are back in action on Wednesday when they travel to Hartford for a 3 p.m. start. Central Connecticut graduate Betsy Vendel has been named the head women's lacrosse coach it was announced on Monday. Vendel is the all-time leading scorer in CCSU history and was most recently at Southern Connecticut State University where she was the interim head coach. "We are excited to name Betsy Vendel as our new Head Coach of the women's lacrosse program and welcome her back into to the Blue Devils family," Central Connecticut Director of Athletics Brian Barrio said. "Her experience playing at CCSU and her coaching background will invaluable in building a successful program at CCSU and mentoring our student-athletes." "It is a great feeling to be returning to lead the women's lacrosse program at CCSU," said Vendel. "I am looking forward to working with a great group of student-athletes and I want to thank Brian Barrio and Amy Strickland (Associate AD/SWA) for having the confidence in me to take over the program. It means a lot to me to be named the Blue Devils head coach and I can't wait to get started." Vendel is a 2014 graduate of Central Connecticut and was a four-year member of the women's lacrosse team. She was a three-time All-Northeast Conference selection and earned Rookie of the Year honors as a freshman during her career. She posted four of the top 10 single-season point totals in program history and started all 64 games of her career. During her time with the Blue Devils, Vendel was awarded the Gail Rutz Award as the most outstanding senior female student-athlete and she finished her career at CCSU ranked first all-time with 219 points, 99 assists and 180 draw controls. She ranks second all-time with 120 career goals. Vendel comes to Central after spending the previous four years at Southern Connecticut State. She served as the team's Interim Head Coach since the fall of 2017 and guided the Owls to match a program-record for single-season wins. The program awas also recognized with Team Academic honors by the IWLCA. Vendel had served as assistant coach since 2015 and was instrumental in all aspects of the day-to-day operations of the team. Vendel's coaching career also includes a season spent as assistant coach at the United States Coast Guard Academy. She has also coached with the Nor'easter club program since 2012. A Connecticut native, she began her coaching career at her alma mater, Newtown High School.
