It was a day for the record books for the University of Richmond lacrosse team, as the Spiders went on to dominate Old Dominion on both ends of the field and take a 20-5 win at Robins Stadium on Sunday afternoon. Senior Marissa Brown solidified herself as one of the top attackers in program history, finishing the day with three assists to set a new program record for career assists with 106 and overtake the previous record of 104, held by Emily Doyle. Brown also finished the game with a pair of goals to total 100 for her career, while redshirt sophomore Sam Geiersbach (103) and senior Mia Castagnero (100) both reached the 100-career point mark in the win. Castagnero started the scoring for the Spiders with an unassisted goal in the first minute, before she assisted Geiersbach just 28 seconds later for the quick 2-0 lead. The quick start propelled the Spiders to an 8-0 advantage with 11:29 to play in the half, as Brown, Geiersbach and Castagnero, as well as freshman Lauren Kingsbury, senior Katie Sciandra and redshirt sophomore Reagan Williams, all tallied goals. The Monarchs got on the board with just over 10 minutes to play in the first half, but the Spiders went on a 5-0 run to close the opening 30 minutes, taking a 13-1 advantage into the locker room. Geiersbach and Castagnero scored in the run, as well as senior Aly Fries and juniors Madison Ostrick and Julia Schmuckler. The Spiders finished the first half with a 30-7 shot advantage while winning the draw control battle, 12-3. Geiersbach opened the second-half scoring with her fourth goal of the day, but Old Dominion scored twice to cut the Spider lead to 14-3. Schmuckler and Castagnero each tallied goals of their own before ODU scored its fourth goal of the afternoon. Brown tallied her 100th career goal with 14:44 to play, before she assisted redshirt freshman Becca Curro on her first career goal. The Monarchs scored once more, but junior Sophia Madsen managed to round out the scoring with two goals in the final five minutes of play. The Spiders finished the day with a 45-13 shot advantage and a 17-10 edge at the draw. Geiersbach led Richmond with seven points on offense, while Brown and Castagnero each finished with five. Eleven Spiders finished with at least one point on the day. Junior Megan Gianforte logged three saves in the win, while senior Danni LeServe also saw time in net. Julie Ball led the Richmond defensive unit with four caused turnovers, four ground balls and a season-high eight draw control wins. The Spiders have a short turnaround, as they return to action on Tuesday, March 12, when they host Presbyterian. Game time at Robins Stadium is set for 5 p.m.
