Despite a career-high four goals from Nicole LeGar, the ECU women's lacrosse team lost to Old Dominion 15-8 on Friday afternoon at L.R. Hill Sports Complex. "We made a lot of youthful errors today that really added up and really hurt us in the end," said head coach Amanda Barnes Moore. "Despite the loss today, I'm happy with the effort and hustle we played with. It just unfortunately wasn't enough to mount a full comeback." ECU (5-4) drops its third straight game while Old Dominion (2-8) snaps a four-game losing streak. The difference in the first half was Old Dominion's ability to get free position shots. Both teams took 16 shots in the opening 30 minutes, but the Monarchs took seven free position shots while ECU had just two. Both of Old Dominion's first two goals came off free position shots. LeGar scored on an unassisted effort to make it 2-1, but the Monarchs rattled off a three-goal run to take a 5-1 lead. ECU clawed back with under 10 minutes remaining in the half. First, Emma Bowman scored off a feed from Camryn Pennypacker. Less than a minute later, Caroline Inderlied got on the scoresheet with an unassisted goal. Unfortunately, Old Dominion got the last goal of the half, scoring on a free position shot with 1:45 left. That gave Old Dominion a 6-3 lead at the break. Christina White made sure the lead was not bigger by making five stops in the cage for ECU. The second half started poorly for the Pirates. Old Dominion rattled off four straight goals before ECU could take a shot. The free position again haunted ECU, with two of those goals coming after stoppages. LeGar got ECU's first goal of the second half when she scored at 23:49. The lead closed to 10-5 when Inderlied got her second goal of the game at 21:47. After a Monarch goal at 21:23 remaining, Brittany Borchers scored her first goal of the game for ECU at 15:43. But two more free position goals put Old Dominion up 13-6 with under 10 minutes remaining. ECU got one more flicker of life when LeGar took the reins of the ECU offense. First, sophomore was able to score off a pass from Hannah Rzempoluch. After Hillary Hardig controlled the ensuing draw, Bowman's pass led to another goal by LeGar with 7:58 left and the lead suddenly just five. The Pirates could not get closer though, and two final Old Dominion goals closed out the game. ECU finished with a 37-31 edge in shots, but Old Dominion had a 14-6 advantage in free position shots. The Pirates went 15-10 at the draw circle, but had 20 turnovers to Old Dominion's 15. White finished with 11 saves for ECU while Hannah Wurzel made 12 stops for the Monarchs. LeGar had four goals for the Pirates while Inderlied had a pair of her own. Borchers and Bowman also scored with Bowman adding an assist as well. For Old Dominion, Glory Johnson had six goals to lead the way. Lilly Siskind, Sophia Richie and Brooke Stein all had a pair of goals. The Pirates will have another chance to get back in the win column on Sunday afternoon. ECU will play host to Campbell for a 2 p.m., match inside Johnson Stadium.
