Behind a career-high six-goal effort from senior Eliza Christman, the California women's lacrosse team reached new heights in Friday night's 12-7 win over Oregon in the Pac-12 opener from California Memorial Stadium. With the victory over the Ducks, the Golden Bears are enjoying their first four-game winning streak in the era of head coach Brooke Eubanks and the program's first since 2013. Defensively, Cal held Oregon off the scoresheet from the 23:31 mark in the first half until the 10:01 mark in the second half. The Bears scored ten straight goals during that span. "Our defensive unit, including Jenny in goal, really allowed the offense to get a lot of opportunities," Eubanks said. "You can see that by our shots. We had 44 shots, that's pretty high for our team, and that's thanks in part to our defensive unit really doing their job. They played lock-down defense, came up with turnovers, ground balls and getting the ball to the offense. They gave us a lot of opportunities, and we were able to finish. "With each game, they get more confidence. They get more connected as a unit. They were very disciplined tonight, but aggressive at the same time. They're getting to a point where they're comfortable taking calculated risks. They were in-sync today." At midfield, Christman was all over the field on Friday. In addition to her six goals, she had eight shots on goal, scooped six draws, collected two ground balls and caused a turnover. As Eubanks started, Christman does it all from both ends of the field. "Eliza is the workhorse," Eubanks said. "She is a true middy where she's doing it all. She is somebody who is stopping the attackers on the other team on defense, pushing the ball into our attack, one of our top dodgers, she takes the draw, she is that multi-purpose player who really can do it all. She's a special player." Typically this season, Cal had been the team jumping out to early leads, but the tables were turned a bit on Friday. Oregon jumped out to an early 3-1 lead before the defense clamped down and the Bears' offense took off. Eubanks credited the 0-4 start to the season with supplying her team the experience and maturity needed to overcome the early deficit. She gave credit to her squad for not panicking when the Ducks took the early momentum. "They know that throughout any game you're going to have ups and downs, so you have to stay the course," Eubanks said. "They know that we're talented enough to come back after going down early. We're talented enough to take and keep a lead. I think it comes with maturity and experience. I'm grateful for how we started the season because I think it has taught us some mental pieces that allow us to be able to finish games like today." As is the norm with the Bears, there were others chipping in offensively. Nikki Zaccaro contributed with four assists, three of which came on goals from Christman, as the duo gave Oregon fits all night long. Caroline Corzel scored twice while Kirsten Swanson notched two points (one goal, one assist). Ashley Ward snagged five ground balls, while Lizabanks Campagna recorded three ground balls herself, and Ella Annest caused two turnovers. In goal, Jenny Wilkens recorded eight saves for the 41st time in her career in 59 games. She also added two ground balls to her career total that ranks second in school history. On Sunday, Cal looks for its first win over a ranked opponent since 2008 when the Bears host No. 23 Colorado at noon from Memorial Stadium.
