The Stony Brook men's lacrosse team dropped the season opener to visiting Penn State, the fourth-ranked team in the nation, 17-4, on Saturday afternoon in Kenneth P. LaValle Stadium. QUOTING THE SEAWOLVES Head Coach Jim Nagle "We ran into a very good team today. They are well coached and a very seasoned team. We had a game plan that proved to less effective than we wanted it to be. We are going to be a great team and have a lot a faith and confidence in the guys, but it was a disappointing first game here against a very good team." HIGHLIGHTS Sophomore defenseman Devin O'Leary (Queensbury, N.Y.) scored his first career goal with 3:14 left in the fourth quarter. Freshman midfielder Layton Harrell (Newtown, Conn.) picked up his first career assist with a pass to junior attacker Tom Haun (Ronkonkoma, N.Y.) with 5:45 left in the fourth quarter. Sophomore midfielder Mike McCannell (Orangeville, Ontario) got the Seawolves on the board with an unassisted goal with 2:28 remaining in the third quarter. Junior attacker Cory VanGinhoven (Fort Mill, N.C.) scored Stony Brook's third goal, unassisted with 4:09 left in the fourth quarter. NOTES Junior attacker Tom Haun (Ronkonkoma, N.Y.) netted his 46th career goal with his tally in the fourth quarter. Junior attacker Cory VanGinhoven (Fort Mill, N.C.) scored his 31st career goal in the fourth quarter. Sophomore midfielder Mike McCannell (Orangeville, Ontario) scored his 16th career goal with Stony Brook's first goal of the game. A total of five Seawolves saw their first action at Stony Brook in Saturday's game: Freshman midfielder David Estrella (North Babylon, N.Y.), junior attacker Jack Hannigan (East Islip, N.Y.), freshman midfielder Layton Harrell (Newtown, Conn.), freshman attacker Matt Anderson (Burlington, Ontario) and freshman midfielder Caleb Pearson (Langley, B.C.). ON DECK Stony Brook will hit the road for the next two games. The Seawolves travel to Brown next Saturday before visiting Long Island rival Hofstra on Feb. 26.
