PHILADELPHIA - A game featuring five ties and three lead changes lived up to the billing in its nationally televised, primetime broadcast slot. Unfortunately for the 12th-ranked University of Pennsylvania women's lacrosse team, the Quakers found themselves on the wrong end of the excitement, dropping a 13-11 decision to No. 11 Princeton. The loss is the second in a row for Penn, dropping the Red and Blue to 9-4 overall and 3-2 in Ivy League play. PENN NEWS AND NOTES *Sophomore Elyse Decker and freshman Michalea McMahon led the Quakers with three goals each, as both players provided a spark plug offensively off the bench. Decker has now scored six goals in her last two games. *Junior attacker Gabby Rosenzweig was kept from scoring, but assisted on three goals. Erin Barry notched two goals and an assist. *Mikaila Cheeseman made seven saves on the night. *Princeton won the draw control battle 15-11, including the last four of the game to deny the Quaker comeback. Zoe Belodeau led Penn with five. *Overall, Penn was effective in stopping Princeton for large stretches of the game with turnovers, holding the Tigers scoreless for over an 11 minute stretch in the first half. Four different Quakers caused at least two turnovers on the day for the Quakers. Princeton had 17 turnovers overall to Penn's 10. *Sophomore defender Liv Smith had a career day on the ground, picking up five ground balls. *Penn has now lost back-to-back games in the regular season for the first time since 2016. *The loss is Penn's third straight to Princeton but first at home since 2015. HOW IT HAPPENED It was the Quakers to shoot out early, gaining an early 2-1 lead on goals from Decker and Zoe Belodeau, while defensively Cheeseman collected saves on each of Princeton's first two shots. A minute and a half later saw the Tigers get on the board for the first time following a saved shot attempt from Erin Barry. Each squad's defense stepped up, trading caused turnovers, but another goal from Decker, this time on the free position opportunity, gave Penn a 3-1 lead just over 10 minutes into the game. Free positions were key for the Quakers early, as Taylyn Stadler netted a goal following a shooting-space foul less than two minutes later to give Penn its largest lead of the night at 4-1. With several chances either way, Penn couldn't convert on the extra man-up opportunity following a Princeton yellow card, and the Tigers started their run with 12:18 in the half, cutting Penn's lead to 4-2. With just a minute gone by since, Princeton turned the tables on Penn's good fortune with the free position, netting one of its own to trim the deficit to 4-3, and a quick draw control and score off a rebounded save evaporated Penn's lead at 4-4 just seconds later. The Quakers couldn't stop the bleeding, with the Tigers at one point collecting seven straight draw controls, as Princeton took its first lead of the night with two straight from Elizabeth George, making it 6-4. A draw control and ensuing goal from Erin Barry helped steady the ship for Penn, and quickly the game was evened up yet again after Penn's offense ignited, sending in three quick shots and ultimately finding the back of the net on a goal from McMahon. The momentum continued for the Quakers, as Abby Bosco garnered a draw control and Penn continued to assert itself on offense, scoring on a goal from Belodeau to regain the lead, 7-6. The teams traded goals to end the half, with Penn scoring at the 17 second mark to hold an 8-7 lead at the break. As offensive as the first half was, the second half was controlled by the defense. Penn had chances to extend its lead early, but it was Princeton to strike first nearly four minutes into the period on another tally from George. In fact, it was Princeton to score the first four goals of the second half, as Penn was unable to get any clean looks at goal, with the Tigers shooting out to a 11-8 lead with 10:28 remaining in the game. Penn didn't panic, though, getting the draw control and taking advantage of a man-up opportunity to draw back to 11-9. Another DC and two free position opportunities put Penn right back in it, taking advantage of Tiger fouls, as McMahon scored on the FPO with another man-up opportunity to cut the lead to 11-10 with 8:34 left to play. A quick turnover off the draw control gave the ball right back to the Quakers, before another turnover forced Penn to make a stop defensively, and it did. Yellow cards reared their ugly head for the Tigers, as Princeton saw two players have to take a seat, giving the Quakers a two-player advantage. McMahon converted again on the free position with 5:13 left, tying the game at 11-11. With energy flowing towards the Quakers, the Tigers pulled a trick out of the hat, scoring despite being a man-down with 3:50 remaining to take a 12-11 lead. The Tigers got another draw, spurning the Quakers late, and a yellow card to Katy Junior all but sealed the win for Princeton who added one more goal late to defeat the Red and Blue. WHAT'S NEXT? The Quakers face a short turnaround with two-straight road games to round out the regular season. Penn will head to the Big Apple for a showdown with Columbia on Saturday, April 20 at 7:30 p.m.
