CLINTON, S.C. – The Sun Devil Lacrosse team earned a dominant 18-6 victory over Presbyterian Sunday afternoon at Bailey Memorial Stadium. The offense was clicking on all cylinders, as the 18 goals scored tied a season-high for goals in a single game. Eleven different players scored a goal, led by Kerri Clayton, who put up four goals for the third time this season. Joining Clayton in recording a hat trick was Julia Burns, who posted six points (three goals & three assists) during an excellent offensive performance. "I was pleased with the way we started this game coming off a loss earlier in the weekend," Coach Martinez Connor mentioned. "It was awesome to see so many players contribute today because they all put in so much work to improve their game and help the team." Several career firsts were accomplished in the well-rounded team win. Emma Carlson and Erica Odell took advantage of increased playing time, each registering their first collegiate goal helping the Sun Devils finish strong. Arizona State made an undisciplined Presbyterian defense pay for fouling, setting a school record with seven free-position goals. For the second time this season, the Sun Devils put up 14 goals in the first half and earned a running clock just over 17 minutes into the game. Back in March, Arizona State scored 14 in the first half of their 18-10 victory over Oregon. The defense unit combined with goalkeeper Berkeley Bonneau to limit the Blue Hose to six goals, the third time they have held an opponent in the single digits this season. The Sun Devils were ready to play from the start, as evidenced by an attacking and aggressive style of play in the opening few minutes. Julia Burns set the tone, scoring the first two goals of the game to put ASU up 2-0 very quickly. The first of thos goals came 22 seconds into the game and represents the quickest goal to begin a game in program history. Burns would have a hand in the Sun Devils' third goal of the game, feeding Kerri Clayton who put her side up 3-0 less than three minutes into the game. Getting the start this afternoon, Carley Adams was active early, earning a pair of free-position attempts in the opening few minutes. She stepped up and easily converted her two eight-meter chances, tripling her season-goal total in the process. DEJA VU! No, you are not seeing double... 1? minute after her first free-position goal, @car_adams3 goes to her bag of tricks again as she beats the goalkeeper with a perfectly placed shot! ?? 5 | ?? 0 24:51 - 1st Half pic.twitter.com/UzrB76HnPc — Sun Devil Lacrosse (@SunDevilWLax) April 14, 2019 With the lead now at 5-0, it was Mallory Martel's turn to take control of the Sun Devil offense. The freshman has seen her time spent in the offense zone increase for good reason as she once again made an impact on both sides of the ball in this one. First, she scored her second goal of the season to increase the lead to 6-0. Later with 22:19 left, Martel found Maddy Hunter and hit her in stride, with Hunter beating the Presbyterian goaltender with a perfectly-placed shot. Martel now has six points over her last three games. Kerri Clayton showed off her impressive combination of strength and quickness on her second goal of the game, putting the Sun Devils up 8-0 with 20:52 still left in the first half. The Blue Hose finally broke the seal and got on the scoreboard with 17:38 left, as the Sun Devils' prideful defensive effort took their offense out of rhythm. Kate Dougherty, from nearby Lawrenceville, Georgia, would enjoy a happy homecoming of sorts when she made a cut and found an opening to score and put her squad up 9-1. Putting together arguable her most all-around performance as a Sun Devil, Mallory Martel's second goal of the game put ASU in double digits and represents her first collegiate multi-goal game. Have a day, @mallory_martel! She becomes the fourth Sun Devils to record a multi-goal performance as the attack has been extremely balanced! The freshman now has three points on the afternoon ?? 10 | ?? 1 13:48 - 1st Half pic.twitter.com/WiUjuOjWwb — Sun Devil Lacrosse (@SunDevilWLax) April 14, 2019 The offense would not stop there, playing with a relentless mentality and ferocious intensity that helped them continue to extend the lead. The first half hat trick was completed by Kerri Clayton, as her goal with 12:51 left pushed the lead to 11-1, which triggered the running clock. It is the second time this season the Sun Devils have forced a running clock on an opponent in the first half. Maria Villanti's play is peaking at the right time, as she has provided a lift offensively for the Maroon & Gold as the season comes to an end. After adding another goal today, Villanti now has at least one goal in six of her last seven games. Only 13 seconds later, Kylie Kroeger controlled the draw and decided to take it herself, as she would not be denied making a strong move towards the crease. The half wrapped up the same way it started, with Arizona State lighting up the scoreboard. With just under two minutes, Maura Cissel beat her defender one-on-one and finished to extend the lead to 14-2, giving the Sun Devils their largest halftime lead of the season. "The offensive production from our midfield has been tremendous lately and is one of the keys to our success," Coach Martinez Connor remarked. "We ask a lot of them on both ends of the field and they have answered the challenge." Sun Devil Lacrosse's depth and bright future were on display throughout the second half, as Coach Martinez Connor mixed and matched lineups in order to evenly distribute playing time and helped certain players gain more experience. Both sides were held off the scoreboard for the first seven minutes, as Berkeley Bonneau and the defense had their best moments of the game. The drought was snapped by Julia Burns, as she recorded her first hat trick of the season. The Blue Hose managed to score for just the second time in 29 minutes, as they trimmed the Sun Devil lead to 15-3 with 18:32 remaining. For the first time all afternoon, Presbyterian managed to produce back-to-back goals. The momentum quickly shifted back to Arizona State thanks to Kerri Clayton, whose fourth goal of the game quieted the crowd. A pair of special moments would take place at the end of the game, as a couple Sun Devils acheived career milestones. First up, freshman Erica Odell recorded her first collegiate goal, finishing on the first assist of the season by Avery Hamill. Next, it was Emma Carlson's turn to find the back of the net for the first time in her college career, as she converted on Julia Burns' third assist of the game to extend the lead to 18-4. A combination of a committed effort to slow the pace and a running clock prevented Arizona State from extending their lead in the second half, as they cruised to an 18-6 victory. The Sun Devils pick up their fifth win of the season, one shy of matching last year's historic mark of six for a first-year program. Capturing yet another road victory gives the program seven over the past two seasons. Everyone getting in on the fun this afternoon! Erica Odell registers collegiate goal #?1?, finishing off a great pass from @AveryHamill808!
