The University of Mary Washington men's lacrosse team dropped an 18-16 decision to visiting Southern Virginia University on Tuesday afternoon at the Battleground. The Eagles slip to 1-5 overall, and 0-2 in Coast 2 Coast Athletic Conference action.
Southern Virginia scored the first goal of a busy first quarter that saw several runs. The Eagles knotted the score at 1-1 with 9:41 remaining, as Ethan Castleman scored on a Garrett Keogh assist. From there, the Knights would score three straight to take a 4-1 advantage, but the Eagles responded with goals from Cameron Walker on a J.D. Nozemack assist with 3:30 left, and another from Keogh with 1:56 left on another Nozemack helper. SVU capped the quarter with 18 seconds left to take a 5-3 lead to the second.
In the second, Keogh started the scoring with 13:34 left on a Castleman assist. The Knights rallied for a pair of scores to push its margin to 7-4, but UMW's Kristophe Newman tallied his first of the day with 7:49 to go until intermission. SVU scored a pair of goals to up its lead to 9-5, but the Eagles rallied with four straight to knot the score. Keogh scored on a Logan Green assist with 5:29 left, and Walker scored on a Nozemack assist with 4:13 left. Bennett Miller scored with 1:22 left, and Kevin Cruz knotted the score with 25 seconds left. The Knights scored with three seconds left to take a 10-9 lead to intermission.
The visitors reeled off four straight to start the third, before Nozemack stemmed the tide with 2:05 left on an assist from goalie Riley Green. After another SVU score, Keogh scored unassisted to draw to within 15-11 heading to the fourth.
The teams alternated the first six goals of the fourth, with Cruz finding the net twice and Mozemack once for the Eagles. Newman scored with 7:10 left, and Sam Allen drew UMW to within 18-16 with 3:45 left, but UMW would draw no closer.
The Eagles led in shots, 58-45, and ground balls, 49-46. UMW held a 20-18 edge in faceoffs. Green had 13 saves for the Eagles, who will be back in action on Saturday at Christopher Newport at 1:00 p.m.
