Behind hat tricks from senior captain Abbey Brooks, junior Samantha Budd and rookie Marin Hartshorn, Rutgers women's lacrosse (2-1) defeated Marist (0-2), 13-9, Saturday afternoon at HighPoint.com Stadium. The Scarlet Knights outshot the Red Foxes, 31-22, caused 19 Marist turnovers and held the visitor to just three goals in the second half to secure their second win of the season. Budd was all over the field in the win over the Red Foxes, as she contributed five points on three goals and two assists along with three draw controls and a ground ball. Brooks and Hartshorn each added an assist to their hat tricks, while sophomore Taralyn Naslonski dished out a game-high three helpers and earned a team-high five draw controls to aid the cause. On defense, senior Regina Sharp had three caused turnovers and two ground balls, while senior captain Christine DiLullo corralled a game-high four ground balls. "We had a short turnaround from Wednesday and some specific things that we wanted to work on, including clock management, so we're finding our identity with that," said head coach Laura Brand Sias. "We definitely did a better job. We have to find a way to find a common ground, as we were a little slow at times today. But we fought. This was not an easy game and Marist is a quality opponent. We fought our way through it." After Marist opened the game with the first goal of the afternoon, Hartshorn jump started a 4-0 scoring run for Rutgers. The freshman tallied back-to-back goals, while her assist to sophomore Hannah Hollingsworth at the 14:56 mark in the half made it 4-1 in favor of the home squad. The Red Foxes added another scoring tally, but RU added three consecutive goals to extend its lead. The run was highlight be an impressive behind-the-back goal from Brooks which gave Rutgers a 6-2 lead with 11:58 to go in the opening stanza. Marist scored three out of the last four goals in the final minutes of the first half to make it just an 8-5 deficit heading into the locker room, while back-to-back strikes by the visitor out of halftime had Rutgers up just 8-7 at the 28:17 mark. However, the Scarlet Knights locked in on defense from there, allowing just two visitor goals in the final 28 minutes of action and causing nine turnovers in the second half. While the defense held strong, the offense provided enough sparks to secure the win with a 5-2 scoring run down the stretch. Budd scored two consecutive goals, including a nice finish off a tough pass from sophomore Julia Lytle to give RU a 12-8 lead with less than 10 minutes to play. Naslonski then found junior Dakota Pastore to give Rutgers its biggest lead – a 13-9 advantage – to put the game out of reach. Rutgers hits the road for the first time in 2019, as it faces Delaware on Saturday, Feb. 23 in Newark. Follow Rutgers Athletics on Facebook and Twitter for all of the latest news and updates.
