TEMPE, Ariz. – The Sun Devil Lacrosse team ended their home schedule on a high note, earning a 13-11 victory over San Diego State on a night in which the first two seniors in program history were honored pre-game. Arizona State came out inspired, clearly willing to lay it all on the line in order to secure the victory for their two veteran leaders. Defenders Rachel Gregory and Sydney Bosmans will always be remembered for having made a significant impact on Arizona State Lacrosse, helping set the foundation for the program moving forward. Both seniors saw playing time in their final game at Sun Devil Soccer/Lacrosse Stadium. "It was a great opportunity to honor and celebrate Rachel and Sydney, two individuals that have sacrificed so much for this program," Coach Martinez Connor remarked. "As a team, we wanted to make sure we did everything we could to assure they would walk off the field victorious one final time at home." As far as the actual game, it took a full 60-minute effort by the whole team in order to hold on for the win. The Sun Devils record their sixth win of the season, matching last seasons' total, which was a historic mark for a first-year program. ASU will have two chances to earn their seventh win and set a new program-high, starting with No. 16 USC on Saturday afternoon in Los Angeles at 2 p.m. Arizona State received offense in many forms, as the squad saw four different players enjoy multi-goal performances. Emily Glagolev showed no signs of rust after missing the last game, as she was effective all evening breaking down the Aztec defense. The sophomore attacker has taken her game to another level as the season moves along. After another brilliant performance in which she finished with a career-high nine points (3 goals & 6 assists), Glagolev now has an incredible 38 points over her last 10 games. She has at least two points in each of her last seven games. She reached the 50-point plateau in style, putting the Sun Devils up for good with a goal late in the second half. "There is not much more I can say about Emily Glagolev other than we are just so incredibly fortunate to have her on our team," Coach Martinez Connor mentioned. "She continues to work hard to improve her game and it is reflected in her recent performance." Glagolev was not alone in generating offense for the Sun Devils, as sophomore Taylor Carson turned in a season-best four goals. Carson's fifth multi-goal performance gives her at least one point in three consecutive games, as she has provided a spark off the bench as of late. Freshman Kaylon Buckner caused havoc on the Aztec defense all afternoon, showing the ability to both score and facilitate. Buckner's three assists are a new career-high while her four points are the most she has produced since winning Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Week honors thanks to a four-point performance in the week one win over Kennesaw State. It is hard to leave out the contributions of the consistent and reliable duo of Kylie Kroeger and Maria Villanti, who continue to excel in many aspects of the game. While scoring is only part of their games, both sophomore midfielders still managed to put together multi-goal performances. For Villanti, it is the fourth consecutive game and seventh time over the last eight games that she has registered at least one goal, as she continues her hot scoring streak. Not to be outdone, Kroeger has at least one goal in six of her last eight outings, boasting five multi-goal efforts to her name. "I can't say enough about how impressive the durability of Maria and Kylie is, considering how much we ask of them," Coach Martinez Connor stated. "For each of them to have played in and started all 16 games, it is a testament to the way they take care of themselves, their commitment to recovery, and the preparation done in the weight room during the week." Goalkeeper Berkeley Bonneau did what she does best, coming through with tough and timely saves as the last line of defense for the Sun Devils. She was effective yet again in the cage, making 14 saves, which represents her 11th double-digit save performance in 2019. Bonneau also picked up her sixth win of the season, beating her mark of five last year to give her the new school record for single-season wins. In an attempt to give the seniors one last positive memory at home, the Sun Devils came out motivated and ready to compete from the opening whistle. Arizona State quickly took a 3-0 lead with 25:45 still remaining in the first half behind the strength of three different goal scorers. Kaylon Buckner got it started by reaching the double-digit mark in goals on the season, cashing-in on the first of many assists from Emily Glagolev. Thirty seconds later, Taylor Carson was the recipient of a Glagolev set-up, as she made the lead 2-0. Maria Villanti found herself in a familiar spot, at the eight-meter line, preparing for one-on-one opportunity with the Aztec goalie. She would win the matchup, sending one past the keeper and into the back of the net to make it 3-0 Sun Devils before the fans could even settle in their seats. An immediate response to San Diego State's first goal set the tone for the rest of the evening, as Arizona State proved they could handle a little adversity. A minute after the Aztecs got on the board, Taylor Carson followed that up with her second goal of the game, with Emily Glagolev picking up her third assist in just six minutes of game time. Perfect execution on a transition opportunity led to the Sun Devils' next goal, as Maria Villanti was the beneficiary of a pass from Kaylon Buckner, who had just broken down the defense with her quickness on display through the midfield. A 5-1 lead was quickly trimmed to 5-3 thanks to a pair of San Diego State goals, but Berkeley Bonneau managed to stop the bleeding with several crucial saves on eight-meter chances. This allowed Kylie Kroeger to shift the momentum back in ASU's favor, as she scored on Glagolev's fourth assists of the afternoon. Despite a 3-0 Aztec run to tie the game up, the Sun Devils remained unfazed and took little time to re-gain their lead. After setting up her teammates throughout the first half, Emily Glagolev finally got a goal of her own to break the tie at the 3:39 mark of the first half. It took the Aztecs just 19 seconds to even the game back up, but it was the Sun Devils who would control the rest of the action heading into halftime. Three unanswered goals to end the opening period built a lead that Arizona State would never relinquish. The usual suspect, Emily Glagolev, had her hand in the first goal as she scored for the second time. The assist went to freshman Cabrini Class, who cleared the midfield and delivered it on target to Glagolev for the finish. For the defender Class, it was her first assist at the collegiate level. Kylie Kroeger and Kaylon Buckner teamed up to give the Sun Devils a two-goal lead, each picking up their second goal and assist of the night respectively. Helping her side reach a double-digit goal output in the first half, Taylor Carson completed the hat trick with only 27 seconds remaining in the half on Glagolev's fifth assist of the half. A much slower offensive pace developed in the second half, with both teams implementing defensive adjustments to attempt to stymie the opposing attacks. This would not stop Carley Adams from scoring, however, as she opened up the scoring in the second half with her third goal over the last two games. Adams' goal gave the Sun Devils a four-goal lead for the first time. The assist, coming from Emily Glagolev, was a historic one. She tied Julia Burns school record for assists in a single game (6), which Burns set earlier in the season back in March during an 18-10 victory over Oregon. It took the Aztecs almost 10 minutes to score in the second half, as a combination of defensive adjustments by Coach Martinez Connor and the coaching staff as well as some excellent play by Berkeley Bonneau made the difference. Taylor Carson extended the lead back out to four, notching her fourth goal of the game in the midst of an Aztec scoring drought. The drought would last for nearly 14 minutes, as the Sun Devils showed great awareness and game management by slowing the game down with a comfortable advantage. "We made some adjustments and I was pleased with the way we executed in the second half," Coach Martinez Connor said. "We learned from some of our mistakes late in games in the past and made sure we played under control, since we had the lead." The Aztecs finally showed signs of life offensively towards the end of the game, producing back-to-back goals only 24 seconds apart to pull back within two. That would be as close as they would get, as the star of the night, Emily Glagolev, had one last "trick" of her sleeve to send the fans home happy. The sophomore completed the hat trick while also clinching a victory, putting her side up three with 5:14 to go. On Senior Day, the Sun Devils earned a 13-11 victory over San Diego State. Next up, the Sun Devils travel to Los Angeles to take on their sixth Top-25 team of the season, the No. 16 USC Trojans. The game is scheduled for Saturday, April 20 at 2 p.m. PT/MST and will be broadcasted live through the USC Digital Stream. The Trojans sit atop the conference with an 8-1 record in Pac-12 play. The contest will represent the regular season and Pac-12 finale for both teams, with the Pac-12 Women's Lacrosse Tournament kicking off April 25.
