The Maritime men's lacrosse team suffered its first setback of the season on Wednesday afternoon, falling to the Coast Guard Bears by the score of 12-8 on Reinhart Field. Maritime was led by three players that had two goals apiece including seniors Nick Pellegrino (Melville, N.Y./Half Hollow Hills East) and Ian Danahy (West Nyack, N.Y./Clarkstown South), with freshman Matt DeMeo (Sayville, N.Y./Sayville) also scoring two goals. Senior T.J. Ragusa (Wantagh, N.Y./Wantagh) and junior Michael Petty (Port Washington, N.Y./Paul D. Schreiber) rounded out the scoring for the Privateers in the loss. Defensively Maritime was led by sophomore long-pole midfielder Ciaran McEnroe (Pearl River, N.Y./Don Bosco Prep (N.J.)), who had three caused turnovers on the afternoon, while sophomore defender Mark Buchner (Wantagh, N.Y./Wantagh) had two forced turnovers on the day. Five other Privateers forced one turnover apiece on the day. In the ground ball department it was Buchner to lead the Privateers with seven loose-ball pickups, while Pellegrino was second on the team with six followed by McEnroe with four. On faceoffs, freshman Joey Manno (Port Washington, N.Y./Paul D. Schreiber) was 7-of-21 and had three ground balls on the game. In goal senior Brendan McNally (Long Beach, N.Y./Long Beach) had a busy afternoon making 25 saves, three shy of his previous career high set a season ago against Stockton. McNally also contributed with one ground ball while suffering the loss in the cage for the Privateers. Coast Guard started out of the gate with two goals through the first 12 minutes of the game. Pellegrino scored a man-down goal to trim the lead in half with 1:46 to go in the opening frame. However Coast Guard scored a goal in transition with two seconds left to take a 3-1 lead into the second quarter. Coast Guard opened the second with two more goals before sophomore Danny Connell (Seaford, N.Y./Seaford) found DeMeo on a pass as DeMeo potted his 10th goal of the season to make the score 5-2. Pellegrino found the back of the goal for the second straight by the Privateers but Coast Guard scored the final two goals of the half to take a 7-3 lead into the halftime break. Danahy scored the first goal of the second half midway through the third quarter to pull Maritime back within three before Coast Guard closed out the half with two straight tallies and took a 9-4 advantage into the final quarter of play. DeMeo got on the board for the second time on the game with just under two minutes gone by in the half as Buchner collected the assist on the tally. The Bears added the next two goals to take an 11-5 lead before Danay scored a man-up goal to trim the deficit to five. After Coast Guard scored their 12th and final goal with 2:52 to go in regulation, Ragusa scored his fifth on the season followed by a goal by Petty to round out the scoring for the game. Freshman Mike Leake (Rockville Centre, N.Y./South Side) had the assist on Petty's goal for his first collegiate point. Maritime (5-1, 1-0 Skyline) will resume Skyline Conference play on Saturday morning, when the Privateers play host to the Mount St. Vincent Dolphins for an 11:00 a.m. start on Reinhart Field. Coast Guard (5-1) will be on the road once again for its next game as the Bears will visit local foe Connecticut College for a 7 p.m. start on Tuesday, March 27.
