A scoreless streak to open the second half doomed the ECU women's lacrosse team to a 18-9 loss to visiting Vermont on Sunday afternoon. ECU (5-3) drops a home game for the first time in four tries this season. It is also the first time the Pirates have lost consecutive games this year. Vermont (4-1) improves to a perfect 3-0 on the road. ECU got off on the right foot, scoring three of the game's first four goals. Camryn Pennypacker opened the scoring at 28:32 on a free-position shot while Ally Stanton added an unassisted goal less than three minutes later. After Jenna Janes opened the Catamounts' account, Nicole LeGar scored off a pass from Brittany Borchers, giving ECU a 3-1 lead with 23:57 left in the first half. That early lead was wiped out by a 6-0 Vermont run. Janes was at the center of it for Vermont, assisting on goals from Elise Koehl and Maris Large before scoring a pair of her own. Grace Giancola and Taylor Mullen added a goal each to make it 7-3 Vermont with 4:50 remaining in the first half. Brittany Borchers finally broke the Vermont run when she scored an unassisted goal, but Janes followed with two more goals, giving her five in the first half. ECU ended the first half on a high note when Megan Pallozzi rattled off a pair of goals, both unassisted. That cut the Vermont lead to just 9-6 and gave ECU momentum heading into the halftime break. However, ECU's momentum did not follow the Pirates out of the locker room. The Pirates did not score for the first 19:26 of the second half. In that span, Vermont tallied eight straight goals, extending the lead from 9-6 to 17-6. Koehl, Dani Paterno and Jenny Caoili all scored two goals during the streak while Alex Vignona had a goal and two assists. Pallozzi finally ended the Vermont run by winning the draw and then racing in for an unassisted goal. Caroline Inderlied scored her first goal of the game 91 seconds later, also on an unassisted effort. The final ECU goal came with 3:51 remaining, when LeGar again scored off a Borchers pass. Vermont added one final goal with 37 seconds remaining to push the final tally to 18-9. Pallozzi had three goals to lead ECU while Borchers had a goal and two assists. Christina White made eight saves in goal while Camryn Pennypacker had four draw controls. For Vermont, Janes finished with five goals and four assists while Vignona had two goals and five assists. Maddy Kuras made five saves in the cage and Grace Giancola finished with nine draw controls. ECU will return to action with a road match against Old Dominion on Friday, March 15. That contest is slated to begin at 7 p.m.
