The Basics • Score: #16 Johns Hopkins-20, Furman-6 • Records: JHU (4-1) • FU (1-4) • Location: Baltimore, MD • Homewood Field • The Short Story: The 16th-ranked Johns Hopkins women's lacrosse team got six points each from senior Miranda Ibello, junior Mackenzie Heldberg and sophomore Aurora Cordingley as the Blue Jays rolled to a 20-6 win over visiting Furman. How it Happened • After jumping out to an early two-goal lead on goals by Cordingley and redshirt senior Ellie McNulty, Hopkins fell behind 3-2 with 17:14 to play in the half. Cordingley ended the Paladins' three-goal run with a free position goal two minutes later, sparking an 8-0 run that gave the Blue Jays a 10-3 lead at the half. • Ibello and junior Maggie Schneidereith combined for four straight goals and the lead was 7-3 just nine minutes later. Cordingley then completed her hat trick on a bouncer in front at the 4:57-mark. Senior Nicole DeMase scored in traffic off a Cordingley helper and Heldberg then closed out the first-half scoring with a shot on the run off the Ibello feed. • Furman struck first in the second half, ended Hopkins' run with a Kyra LaMotte strike just 69 seconds in. The Blue Jays answered just 18 seconds later with Heldberg's second of the day. Cordingley then slipped a pass to Schneidereith on the doorstep for the quick-stick score at 28:02 to make it a 12-4 game. • Heldberg's goal was the first of 10 straight for the Blue Jays, in a span of 24 minutes, as JHU put the game out of reach. Freshman Georgia Esmond and Sam Leva highlighted the run with the first goals of their career, while Esmond also picked up her first career assist. Hanna Demis and Hannah Feinberg scored a pair for the Paladins in the final four minutes to account for the 20-6 final. What it Means • Hopkins improves to 5-0 all-time against Furman, including 4-0 at Homewood Field. JHU is 4-1 to start the season for the second time in the last three years. • The Blue Jays' 20 goals are the most in a game since a 20-5 win over Michigan on March 16, 2014. • Schneidereith handed out her 50th career assist and is now tied for ninth in school Division I history. • Cordingley posted a career-best six points and three assists, while Heldberg had a career-best four helpers.
