Hempstead, NY – Johns Hopkins scored the first four goals of the second half to turn a 5-4 deficit into an 8-5 lead as the 17th-ranked Blue Jays defeated Hofstra, 15-11, Saturday evening at James M. Shuart Stadium. Hofstra did get three goals and an assist from Alyssa Parrella in the loss. Hofstra fell to 4-3 on the season with all three of its losses against nationally ranked teams. Johns Hopkins improved to 6-1 on the year. The first half saw the Blue Jays jump out to a 2-0 lead in the first 11 minutes behind goals from Becca Boyle and Lexi Souder. The Pride responded with four unanswered goals to go up, 4-2. Parrella and Alexa Mattera scored free position goals with 16:08 and 14:54 on the clock, respectively. Tessa Sinatro put the Pride up, 3-2, with an extra-player goal from Parrella with 11:41 remaining and Erin Demek finished the run 2:13 later with a free position tally. After two Hopkins goals from Aurora Cordingley, Parrella sent Hofstra into the locker room with the lead after an unassisted goal with 35 seconds to go. Coming out of halftime, the Blue Jays got four goals from four different players over the first 7:20 to take the lead for good. Meckenzie Heldberg started the scoring with an unassisted goal 2:57 in and Shelby Harrison put the visitors on top for good with a free position goal that made it 6-5 with 5:11 elapsed. Cordingley and Maggie Schneidereith finished the Hopkins run that made it 8-5 with 22:40 remaining. The Pride would get within two on two different occasions, the last at 11-9 after a goal from Demek with 8:10 to play. But the Blue Jays scored three straight goals, two from Schneidereith, to end the Hofstra comeback attempt. Jess Smith had 12 saves in goal for the Pride, while her Johns Hopkins counterpart, Haley Crosson, had 14 stops. Hofstra got two goals and two assists from Katie Whelan and two goals from Demek. Darcie Smith had a goal and a career-high 12 draw controls. Jess Smith had four ground balls to lead the team. Heldberg led the way for John Hopkins with four goals and added two assists. Schneidereith had three goals and four assists while Cordingley finished with three goals. Shelby Harrison and Keegan Barger picked up three ground balls and Harrison added five draw controls. Hofstra will return to action next Saturday, March 16, when it takes on High Point in Sparks, Maryland, at 5 p.m. Notes: -Parrella moved into a tie for fourth place on the all-time goals list at Hofstra with 133. She is now tied with former All-American Kimberly Hillier (2004-07). -Jess Smith's four ground balls matched her season-high. -Darcie Smith's 12 draw controls were the most since Brittain Altomare had 12 against Quinnipiac on March 8, 2015. -Hofstra is 2-7 all-time versus Johns Hopkins. -Hofstra wore special USA-themed uniforms as part of Military Appreciation Day.
