Sophomore Katie Whelan led Hofstra in scoring for the second consecutive game with four points (2G, 2A) and junior Alexa Mattera added a hat trick to lead the Hofstra Women's Lacrosse team to a dominant 13-4 victory over Bucknell on Saturday afternoon at Graham Field. The win was the Pride's first of the season and evens their record at 1-1, while the Bison falls to 0-2 with the loss. It was another strong game to start the career for freshman goalie Jess Smith as she had 11 saves in the win for Hofstra. Junior Alyssa Parrella put the Pride ahead 2-0 early on with a pair of free-position goals and the lead would grow to 6-1 with 5:34 left in the stanza after Whelan, freshman Erin Demek, senior Tessa Sinatro and Mattera added goals during a 4-0 scoring run. After taking a 6-2 lead into the break, Hofstra broke the game completely open with four straight goals over the first 16:08 of the second half to push the lead to 10-2. Showcasing the Pride's wealth of offensive firepower, the four goal scorers all recorded their first of the day as freshman Jackie Gatti, sophomore Arianna Esposito, sophomore Shannon Boyle and junior Darcie Smith helped to give Hofstra the eight-goal lead. The Pride would cruise from there and finished the game by scoring three of the final four goals to cement the victory. Darcie Smith finished with a game-high six draw controls, along with a team-best three caused turnovers and a pair of ground balls. Boyle tallied a game-high five ground balls, while Jess Smith added a trio of ground balls. Gatti finished with a goal and an assist in the game as well as three ground balls. Audrey Walsh had two points (1G, 1A) for Bucknell, which got five ground balls from Tegan Warren, four caused turnovers from Gabby Walsh and four ground balls from Callie DeWitt. Hofstra has a short turnaround until its next game as the Pride will host Wagner on Tuesday in its home opener. First draw control is scheduled for 3 p.m. NOTES - Hofstra is now 10-5 all-time against Bucknell. It was the second straight season the Pride scored 13 goals in a win over the Bison as Hofstra captured a 13-1 victory in 2018. - Parrella has scored at least one point in 12 consecutive games. - The two assists by Whelan marked a career-high. - The hat trick was Mattera's eighth of her career. - Boyle's five ground balls marked a new career-high.
