ehind a combined 17 goals from Samantha Herman, Kaely Kyle, Abby Hormes, and Ashley Britton, High Point downed Furman, 21-12, in the 2019 season opener. Furman was led by Grace Pollak and Abby Shields with three goals each, while Pollak added three assists and Shields added two. Courtney Baker recorded six saves on the day, while causing three turnovers. Abby Shields and Sophie Brennan opened the game with back-to-back goals for the Paladins, before High Point reeled off six-straight goals to take a 6-2 lead with just under 15:00 to go in the half. The teams then traded goals until High Point used three goals to take a 10-4 lead. The Paladins then used three-straight goals of their own to cut the lead to 10-7, before the Panthers scored to take an 11-7 lead into halftime. The Panthers held the momentum to start the second half, scoring three-straight goals to take a 14-7 lead and force the Paladins to take a timeout with 27:09 remaining. The Panthers continued to add to the lead, pushing it to 16-7, before the Paladins cut into the lead on Grace Pollak's second goal of the day with just under 20:00 to go. High Point responded with back-to-back goals, however, taking an 18-8 lead with 18:00 remaining. Pollak picked up her third goal of the day at the 14:34 mark, cutting the High Point lead to 18-9. Sydney Catts then netted her first goal of the season on a free position attempt with 11:00 remaining, cutting the lead to 18-10. Furman used goals from Leah Nonnenmann and Hannah Demis to cut the lead to 19-12 with under 6:00 to go in the game, but the Panthers held on for a 21-12 victory. Herman led the Panthers with five goals, while Sarah Zeto made nine saves. Furman is back in action next weekend, traveling to Davidson for a 2:00 p.m. matchup.
