TEMPE, Ariz. - California trailed Arizona State by two goals with just over two minutes left on the clock. To make matters worse, the Sun Devils scooped up the ensuing draw control to maintain all the momentum. An ASU shot hit the post, the Golden Bears snagged the ground ball and marched down field. Cal went on to score back-to-back goals, including one to tie the game with eight seconds left in regulation, before picking up an exciting 12-11 overtime victory over the Sun Devils Monday afternoon on the ASU campus. Cal improved to 5-7, 2-3 on the year. This marks Cal's first one-goal win and first overtime victory since a 10-9 win over San Diego State on March 20, 2016. The Bears have now won both meetings in Tempe since the Sun Devils started its program last year, and the road team has won all three meetings in series history. Susie Ropp scored four goals on the afternoon. She netted her fourth with 53 seconds left on the clock to cut ASU's lead down to one. The Bears took the draw, beating the Sun Devils in that category by a margin of 16-9, and Kirsten Swanson fired a shot with eight seconds left to the send the game into overtime. In the extra period. Nikki Zaccaro snuck around from behind the goal and zipped a low shot past the keeper to send the Cal bench pouring out onto the field. The Bears had to put together multiple comeback efforts in order to get the game into overtime. In the first half, the Bears scored the first two goals of the day before ASU rattled off five in a row to take a 5-2 lead into halftime. The Sun Devils scored in the first minute after the break, but then the Bears' offense came alive. Cal scored four of the next five goals to cut the lead down to one. ASU tallied back-to-back goals to increase its lead back up to three. But Cal kept coming, netting three straight to tie the game at nine. The Sun Devils scored the next two to go back up by two with just over two minutes left before Cal took control of the game for good. Swanson and Kuberra each scored twice, and Kuberra's assist gave her three points on the day with Zaccaro who tallied a goal and two helpers. Caroline Corzel and Eliza Christman each notched a goal and an assist, and Ashley Ward found the back of the net on an eight-meter shot. Christman also racked up seven draws, while Lizabanks Campagna record five along with two ground balls and a caused turnover. Jenny Wilkens made eight saves and secured four ground balls. She is six ground balls shy of the school career record. Cal returns to Berkeley next weekend for the final two home games of the season. Next up is a battle against No. 16 USC on Friday, March 29, at 5 p.m. from California Memorial Stadium. Senior Day will be two days later on Sunday, March 31, at noon against Arizona State.
