TEMPE, Ariz. – The Sun Devil Lacrosse team showed tremendous fight, but eventually suffered a 13-7 loss to No. 23 Colorado on Sunday afternoon at Sun Devil Soccer/Lacrosse Stadium. Arizona State managed to put together an extremely competitive first half against the Buffaloes. For the first time in program history, the Sun Devils entered halftime tied with a Top-25 opponent. Paige McGlothlin was a big reason why, as the freshman was a force offensively, finishing with a hat trick. Emily Glagolev dissected the Colorado defense all game, recording a career-high four assists. Goalkeeper Berkeley Bonneau showed flashes of brilliance, making 11 saves, several of the highlight-reel variety as she helped hold the Buffaloes' offense in check a majority of the game. "The performance in the first half proved we can hang with a Top-25 team," Coach Martinez Connor mentioned after the game. "There were some real positives to take away, but also several things that we need to work on as we continue to try to improve to finish out the year." Kerri Clayton picked up right where she left off last game, following up a 12-point performance in the victory over Oregon on Friday with a quick start to this one. The attacker scored just 40 seconds into the game, opening the scoring for both teams and putting the Sun Devils up 1-0. A model of consistency, Clayton has now scored at least one goal in 27 of her 30 games as a Sun Devil. A strong start would continue for the Sun Devils, as they took a 2-0 lead courtesy of Paige McGlothlin's first goal of the game, coming with 26:39 left in the first half. Emily Glagolev fed her a perfect pass, the first of many assists on the night for the sophomore, who continues to thrive as both a scorer and facilitator. She now has 28 points over her last eight games and continues to lead the Pac-12 in assists (25) during conference play. Pressure defense from Arizona State would prevent Colorado from scoring for the first ten minutes of the contest, not allowing them much time or space to make decisions. The Buffaloes finally broke the seal, with Charlie Rudy scoring at the 19:24 mark. The Sun Devils would answer right back, pushing their lead back to two. Kylie Kroeger took advantage of an offensive rush, catching the defense on its' heels and beating the goaltender for her 12th goal of the season. Colorado's Miranda Stinson would knot things up with back-to-back goals, the second coming with 9:22 left in a low scoring first half. The Maroon & Gold did an excellent job of controlling the tempo and slowing down a potent Buffaloes' offense. The tie would not last long, thanks to a Julia Burns goal, cashing in on another excellent pass from Emily Glagolev. Miranda Stinson would add her third goal of the half, tying the game at four with two minutes left in the half. Goalkeeper Berkeley Bonneau and the Sun Devil defense teamed up to stymie the Colorado offense, holding them to just four first-half goals and keeping the game tied after the first 30 minutes. Freshman Paige McGlothlin continues to play beyond her years, stepping up on a big stage. She would give the Sun Devils another lead with her second goal of the game, scoring with 27:33 left in the game to put ASU up 5-4. The momentum began to swing, as Colorado scored two consecutive goals to take their first lead of the game with 23:20 left. Arizona State would bounce back, however, as McGlothlin registered a hat trick to even the contest at six. For McGlothlin, it is her second hat trick and fourth multi-goal game of her young career. Colorado would prove why they are at Top-25 team and tied atop the Pac-12 Conference standings, going on a 7-0 run over the next 18 minutes that would clinch a Buffaloes' victory. Arizona State showed resiliency and refused to give up, attempting to chip away at the lead by continuing to apply pressure offensively. They finally broke through with a last-minute goal, fighting to the last whistle. Maria Villanti's six goal of the season came off the fourth assist of the day by Emily Glagolev, closing the game on a high note, as the Sun Devils fell 13-7. "Colorado went on a run and began to look like the Top-25 team that they are," Coach Martinez Connor observed. "That last goal was important for me to see as it shows me that we weren't willing to give up and played hard until the very end." The Sun Devils will hit the road once again next weekend, heading to the east coast for a pair of matchups. First up, Arizona State travels to Virgina to take on Liberty on Friday at 1:00 MST. Next, the Sun Devils head down to South Carolina to take on Presbyterian on Sunday at 10 a.m. MST. A season ago, ASU set a program-high for goals in a game during a 23-5 victory over Presbyterian at home.
