Potsdam, NY – With a goal from Marcus Lavarnway just 31 seconds into the season-opener the Clarkson University Men's Lacrosse team was well on its way to its highest goal output in nearly 15 years as the Golden Knights opened the 2019 season with a 22-4 victory over SUNY Canton on Thursday afternoon at Hantz Turf Field. The Golden Knights, now 1-0, will head to Brockport on Saturday. Canton opens the season at 0-1. The 22 goals for the Golden Knights were the most since the team posted 23 against Vassar in the middle of the 2004 season. It marked the fourth time that Clarkson has surpassed 20 goals in a game in the last two decades and the 22 tallies was the most in a season-opener since 1989. Although the Knights opened the contest with five goals in the first quarter, it was the middle two quarters where the Green and Gold enforced their will on the Roos, dominating in all aspects of the game. Clarkson produced 15 goals in the second and third quarters combined, outshooting Canton 45-5 with a 33-11 edge in groundballs over that 30-minute stretch. Clarkson opened the game with 20 goals in the first 45 minutes while holding Canton scoreless, with the Roos finally getting on the board with a little under 10 minutes remaining in the game. Twelve difference players scored at least one goal in the contest, with Conor Bartlett, Evan Burgett, Pierce Currie and Peter Herrick each contributing three goals. Marcus Lavarnway and Kilday also chipped in two scores for the Knights. Burgett tossed in three assists for a team-high six points and Bartlett also had two assists for five points. Freshmen Will Britton, Brayden Wilkins, Jason Perez and Andrew Paganelli each scored their first collegiate goals on Thursday as well. Liam St. Croix, Derek White, Riley Holzman, and Glen Pinkava each recorded five groundballs, with the latter pair combining for 14 wins on 19 faceoff tries. Clarkson finished with a 70-27 edge in shots (49-12 in shots on goal) and ended up with a 58-33 advantage in groundballs. Kevin Dyckman stopped three shots in 33 minutes for the Knights before being relieved by Matt Yonko and Alexandre Michaud for the final 27 minutes, as that duo combined for four saves. For Canton, Justin LaDuke made 20 saves while allowing 20 goals, and Parker Hornung came on for the fourth quarter to make seven more saves for the Roos.
