Adams State Men's Lacrosse had a strong showing in its 2019 season opener as the team dispatched of Johnson & Wales University 15-1 on the road Sunday afternoon. The win gives the Grizzlies their first 1-0 start since the 2011 season in the program's first year as a NCAA sport. Helping the Grizzlies secure the 15-1 road win was the aggression shown on both offense and defense. They put up 49 total shots on the day and held the Wildcats (0-1) to just nine. Of the 49 Grizzly shots in the game, 22 were on goal. Defensively, Adams State also managed to forced 24 JWU turnovers and had just 13 of their own. They won the ground ball battle 37-14 over JWU and the intensity on defense help get the offense going. Adams State was 11-13 on the day in clear attempts to swing load into its offensive attack and held JWU to just 8-17 on clear attempts. The first period saw the Grizzlies score four goals in the first 15 minutes of play and the first one came in less than three minutes into the game. Returning scoring leader Kale Wilson picked up where he left off from a season ago and scored the game's first goal with 12:14 on the clock. Just over a minute later, Nick Selfridge made it a 2-0 game with his first goal of the season and the Grizzlies led 2-0. Looking to keep the offensive rhythm in their favor the Grizzlies scored goal No. 3 with 9:02 left in the first frame on a Johnny Rosas goal. The Wildcats never scored in the opening period of action but managed to slow down the Grizzlies for much of the period. The fourth Grizzly goal came with 1:57 left to play when Kage Janes scored to make it a 4-0 contest. Five goals from Adams State in the second period, including three within in the first four minutes opened the game up. Chase Rodine pushed the advantage to 5-0 for the visiting team just 19 seconds into play off an assist from Kevin Chitwood. Exactly 59 seconds later, Selfridge scored his second goal of the day to put Adams State in the driver seat with a commanding 6-0 lead. Rodine found the back of the net yet again in the first five minutes with his second goal with 11:35 to play in the first half. Christopher Burtschi was credited the assist as the Grizzlies led 7-0. Donnie Simon then found Wilson for the score to make it 8-0. Simon got a ground ball pickup that led to the assist for Wilson's second goal of the afternoon. The final goal of the half came at the 3:40 mark on the clock when Riley Morrison played a pass from Kyle Butler to make it a 9-0 edge for the Grizzlies. Butler notched the assist as the Grizzlies closed out the half outshooting the Wildcats 24-5 (12-1 SOG). Joining the scoring category for the Grizzlies to start the third period was Butler who got his first goal of the year 50 second into the start of the second half. It was the only Adams State goal of the period, as JWU managed to score one goal to avoid the shutout at home. The home team's lone goal of the game came with 5:08 on the clock to make a 10-1 contest going into the fourth. The Grizzlies added five more goals in the game final frame with two coming from Tanner Beck and Wilson, respectively. Beck scored his two goals at the 10:56 mark and 8:40 mark of the fourth to help the Grizzlies jump up 12-1. Wilson matched Beck scoring back-to-back goals as well in the fourth. His first goal of the period and third overall came on an assist from Beck as the duo pushed the lead to 13-1. Wilson then scored again, this time off the assist from Rodine to make it 14-1. Both of Wilson's goals came in the last two minutes of the contest. Rodine and Butler teamed up for the final Adams State goal of the day with :28 on the clock. Rodibe scored quickly off of Butler's pass thanks in part to faceoff victory from Selfridge with :43 on the clock. The quick action help the team score its 15th goal and secure a wire-to-wire win, 15-1. Wilson was the high scorer for the Grizzlies offense scoring four goals. He totaled nine shots in the game with six coming on net and had three ground ball pickups. Beck and Butler each finished with three points in the game.
