Adams State Men's Lacrosse played a back-and-forth affair at home Saturday afternoon against CSU-Pueblo but came up short in a 16-13 loss. Both teams played solid offense as it was made clear early that the game was going to be a shootout. Helping the ThunderWolves (7-5, 2-2 RMAC0 earn the road win was a 3-0 setup in scoring for the third period. The Grizzlies (3-7, 0-4) managed to grab a lead twice in the game after playing from behind the whole time in the first matchup back on March 2. A late surge from CSU-Pueblo combined with a scoreless third period from Adams State proved to be the difference maker. CSU-Pueblo grabbed a 2-0 lead early thanks to a pair of goals in the first five minutes of play. Adams State then responded scoring three unanswered to grab its first lead, 3-2. Johnny Rosas started the scoring run at the 6:55 mark on an assist from Kale Wilson. Rosas played a role in tying the game at 2-all when he found an open Riley Morrison who nailed a quick shot at the 4;33 mark of pay to tie the game. The Grizzlies third goal came on the efforts of Wilson who weaved by his defenders to find an open shot and give the Grizzlies a 3-2 edge with just over 3:30 to play in the first. The ThunderWolves answered with a pair of goals in the final two minutes to lead 5-3 after one. The ThunderWolves extended their run to 4-0 in the second as they added a goal at the 13:56 mark and 9:13 mark while holding the Grizzlies scoreless to lead 6-3. The Grizzlies did not fold and outscored the visitors 6-2 in the final seven minutes of first half to take a 9-8 lead into halftime. Morrison found a rhythm for the Grizzlies in their scoring surge as he scored three of their final six goals, including the first two in a 4-0 run. His first two goals were both unassisted as he found the back of the net at the 7:10 mark and 6:22 mark of the second for the first half hat trick. Wilson scored the third goal of the 4-0 run for Adams State as Kage Janes found him in between the CSU-Pueblo defense. His goal combined with Morrison's efforts tied the game at 6-6 with 5:14 to play in the half. Kyle Butler ended the 4-0 run for the Grizzlies and gave them their second lead of the game when he scored an unassisted goal with 4:23 on the clock. The Grizzlies led 7-6 but the ThunderWolves added two more goals in the second to lead 8-7 with just over 2:30 to play. Adams State did not slow its pace down in the final two minutes of play and managed to score two more goals, both coming in the final minute of play. Tanner Beck was the assist man on both goals as he found an open Wilson and Morrison in the final 60 seconds and helped the Grizzlies lead 9-8 at halftime. Defense was theme for the entirety of the third period as just three goals were scored in 15 minutes of play, all of which that came from CSU-Pueblo. The visitors scored a man up and a man down goal to help take an 11-9 lead into the fourth period. Two more goals scored to start the fourth period capped of a 4-0 run for the ThunderWolves as they owned a 13-9 advantage with 11:10 play in regulation. Kage Janes ended the run with a goal at the 10:33 mark and kept the Grizzlies within three, 13-10. CSU-Pueblo quickly responded with back-to-back goals in a span of 15 seconds to grab its largest of the game at five, 15-10. The 4-1 run from the visitors in the first five minutes of the fourth was enough as they scored just one more goal in the final 10 minutes of play to win by three. Beck scored the second goal of the fourth for Adams State with 9:13 to play thanks to the assist from Rosas to cut the score to 15-11 thanks to the extra man opportunity. The game became a stalemate after Beck's goal as neither team scored for the next three minutes. Jacob Austin ended the drought at the 6:04 mark off the assisted pas from Beck to bring the score to 15-12. The ThunderWolves scored its final goal with just over 4:35 to play in the game to lead 16-12. The Grizzlies final goal did not come until there was 23 seconds left in the game as Rosas found the back of the net on the assist from Emmitt MacFarlane. Both teams finished with 33 shots from the game, but CSU-Pueblo had the shots on goal edge at 27-23. The Grizzlies won the turnover battle with 18, while the THunderWolves had 24. Helping the ThunderWolves secure the three-goal win was a 23-9 advantage in faceoffs for the game. Morrison led the Adams State offense with four goals for four points. Wilson also had four points on three goals scored and one assist. Rosas was also in the four-point club thanks to a pair of goals and assists, respectively. Sawyer Robison had the most groundballs with four, while Terry Trudgian, Coltyn Kelly, Roman Pepelyaev, and Brennan Grass all had three. Trudgian also led the way in faceoffs going 5-9 for the game. Goalie Connor Johnson had the most caused turnovers with three and tallied 11 saves. Weston Bartgis led CSU-Pueblo's offense with a game-high six goals. Tommy Vassallo added three goals and notched an assist for four points. Caleb Cole scored twice and tallied one assist for three points. Jacob Muir picked up 12 groundballs to lead all players and forced one turnover. He also had 23 faceoff wins in 32 attempts. Parker Evans caused two turnovers to lead the defense. In net, Garrett Breeling notched 10 saves in the win. The Grizzlies continue their final homestand next weekend with two more games. They get things started Friday, April 26 against Colorado Mesa with the game start set for 3 p.m.
