The Felician University men's lacrosse team began its 2019 season with a 21-5 non-conference neutral-site loss to Barton University on Sunday afternoon. The game was hosted by U.S. Lacrosse at Tierney Field. Barton (1-2), from Wilson, N.C., is participating in its inaugural campaign. Felician lifted the lid on the second intercollegiate varsity season of its program. Sophomore Patrick McAndrew (Newton, N.J.) paced the Golden Falcons with three goals. Classmate Evan Turner (Rockaway, N.J.) registered a goal and an assist and junior transfer Ausar Wright (Pemberton, N.J.) also scored for Felician. Freshman faceoff man Jose McLean-Byrd (Bronx, N.Y.) set a pair of Golden Falcon single-game records. McLean-Byrd went 19 for 29 in the faceoff circle and picked up 10 ground balls. Only once last year did a Felician player reach double figures in faceoff wins, with current sophomore Brian Arias (Union City, N.J.) claiming 11 against Georgian Court University on Apr. 7. Three players, including two current Golden Falcons, shared the previous ground ball record of seven. Barton recorded Sunday's first two goals. A man-up score by McAndrew cut the Bulldog lead in half, and the 2-1 score held for a large portion of the first quarter. Barton closed the period with three markers for a 5-1 lead. The Bulldogs created separation early in period two, extending its spread to 8-1. Wright capitalized on another Felician man advantage late in the first half, but Barton countered and took a 9-2 edge into halftime. The Bulldogs put the game away by tallying the first three goals of the second half. By the time McAndrew fired an unassisted shot into the cage, Barton led, 12-3. The score was 14-3 at the end of the third. Felician sophomore goalkeeper Pat Hemmer (Staten Island, N.Y.) made 17 saves in 51 minutes. The Golden Falcons were only 10 for 24 on clear attempts and committed 29 turnovers. Felician plays another neutral-site game on Sat., Feb. 23. The Golden Falcons and Assumption College will meet at 2 p.m. at LaMoy Field on the campus of Post University in Waterbury, Conn.
