BROCKPORT, N.Y. – The College at Brockport men's lacrosse team hung on to win their final game of the regular season on Saturday, downing Oswego State in State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) play, 9-8. The Golden Eagles improve to 8-5 in 2017 and have a 4-2 mark in league play while the Lakers fall to 6-9 on the year and 2-4 in the SUNYAC. Brockport came out strong, netting two goals in the opening frame. Michael Drankwater worked in a goal off the opening face off, going straight to cage for the early 1-0 lead. Liam Cannon connected with Mark Robinson for the second Green and Gold goal, to take a 2-0 advantage into the second quarter. Brockport had a strong start to the second frame, with the Robinson to Cannon connection working again to push out to a 3-0 lead. The Golden Eagles saw the Lakers sneak in a pair of goals, but Zach Cook posted the Brockport answer to close the half, and take a 4-2 lead into the break. Michael Caternolo got things started for Brockport in the second half, as he picked up the face off win, and went straight to cage to post the 5-3 Brockport lead in the opening 11 seconds of action. The Golden Eagles saw the Lakers erase their lead however, as Oswego pieced together three straight scores. Jake Giudice had the answer, on a man-down situation, working in an unassisted score to reclaim the lead at 6-5 with 11:15 to play. Cannon added his third and fourth goals respectively to close the third, burying Brendan Fitzgerald and Cook assists to take an 8-5 edge into the break. In the final frame, Brockport took advantage of a man-up opportunity in the opening half of the frame to post a Colton Oliver goal off the Giudice feed to push their lead to 9-5. The Green and Gold saw a desperate Oswego work in three straight, but held their counterparts to just that, as they secured the 9-8 victory. The Brockport net minder Dallas Meyers played an outstanding game for the Golden Eagles, making 17 saves in 60 minutes of action in route to the win. The junior also had five ground balls on the day. The Green and Gold defense was led by Colin Blind and Steven Gurin, who each accounted for three caused turnovers apiece, while Blind added three ground balls and Gurin picked up two. Cook went 5-for-6 in the face off circle, adding one ground ball and one caused turnover. The Golden Eagles secure a spot in the SUNYAC playoffs with the win, and will look ahead to their matchup in the semi-finals on Wednesday, May 3.
