SALISBURY, N.C. -- The Grove City College men's lacrosse team continued its southern road trip over Spring Break by dropping a 12-8 decision Wednesday afternoon at NCAA Division II member Catawba in non-conference action at Shuford Stadium.
Junior attackman Henry Brannan (Tampa, Fla./Plant) and freshman midfielder Brett Gladstone (Marriottsville, Md./Marriotts Ridge) both scored three times for the Wolverines (2-2) while freshmen Michael La Forte (Waterford, Conn./Waterford) and Jed Speers (Medina, Ohio/Medina) each scored.
Freshman midfielder Jack Atwood (Hudson, Ohio/Cuyahoga Valley Christian) assisted three goals and freshman midfielder Grant Evans (Pittsburgh, Pa./Upper Saint Clair) added an assist.
Grove City fell behind 5-1 midway through the second quarter and trailed 6-2 at halftime before charging back. Speers scored six seconds into the second half while Brannan scored twice in the third quarter, pulling Grove City to within 7-5. La Forte scored with 14:07 left in the fourth quarter to close Catawba's lead to 9-7, but the Indians countered with three straight goals.
Evans won 18 of 23 face-offs and finished with a team-leading 12 ground balls. Freshman goalie R.J. Miller (Doylestown, Pa./Central Bucks East) picked up four ground balls. Miller also stopped 11 shots.
Catawba owned a 37-32 edge in shots. Grove City had 33 turnovers and Catawba committed 22 turnovers. Senior defender Jesse Shaffer (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) caused two turnovers for Grove City.
The Wolverines return to action Saturday at Capital in non-conference action. Saturday's game will start at 4 p.m. in Bexley, Ohio.
