BUENA VISTA, Va. – Centre men's lacrosse went toe-to-toe with Southern Virginia Thursday evening, eventually falling by a 14-11 score inside Knights Stadium.
The Colonels (4-4) got behind early and remained on the heels of the Knights (5-2), but the home side hung on during a tense fourth quarter to earn a win in the first ever meeting between the two programs.
HIGHLIGHTS
- For the third straight game, Centre capitalized with an early goal as David Caldwell hit the back of the net on an assist from Ethan Hanna in the opening minute.
- The host Knights scored three unanswered before defenseman Graham Robbins was able to end the run with a goal. SVU ended the quarter ahead 4-3 after a late score from Will Hubbs.
- Centre had a turnover or failed to clear on its first three possession of the second quarter, helping the Knights extend their lead to 8-4.
- Caldwell scored twice more in the period, the latter goal of an assist from Duncan MacDonald, and Centre trimmed the lead to 8-6 by the half.
- Both sides tallied three third-quarter goals. Mick Ginnity, David Caldwell and Ridr Knowlton each scored for the Colonels, while keeper Sammy Zickel totaled five saves to help maintain a two-goal deficit into the fourth.
- Centre had more total shots and won five of six faceoffs in the fourth, but the Knights did just enough to stay ahead of the Colonels.
- Hubbs worked his magic for a pair of unassisted scores in the fourth, and Centre ended the game with a flurry of shot attempts, but it wasn't enough overcome SVU's advantage.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Zickel finished with 15 saves, most in his young career.
- Caldwell led Centre with four goals, followed by Hubbs (3) and Knowlton (2).
- Dylan Croft won 15 of 21 faceoffs, also leading the Colonels with seven ground balls. Alex Mozingo claimed four faceoffs, as well, and as a team Centre took 19 of 29.
