Eastern Connecticut State University held UMass Boston lacrosse scoreless for the final 38:46, to earn an 8-3 Little East Conference win Saturday afternoon at James Cotter Field. THE BASICS ECSU 8, UMass Boston 3 (UMass Boston 6-6, Little East 1-2) (ECSU 6-5, Little East 2-1) HOW IT HAPPENED The Warriors swarming defense held the Beacons' off the scoreboard in three of the four quarters to earn the conference win. Sophomore Ned Parker (Stafford, Va.) and freshman Joe Mauceri (Scituate, Mass.) combined to score all three goals in the win. Parker scored a team-high two goals on a team-best 12 shots. In net, freshman Alex Fawcett (Londonderry, N.H.) made 10 saves on 18 shots to keep the Beacons in the game. The freshman made several huge stops throughout the contest to keep UMass Boston within striking distance. His counterpart was just as good, as junior All-Conference honoree Chris Gorman posted nine saves on 12 shots. Sophomore Brett Chin led the Warriors with two goals and four points, while Connor Wyllie tacked on two goals and an assist. After a scoreless first quarter, UMass Boston came out firing in the second. Parker and Mauceri struck for back-to-back goals in a 22-span to make it 2-0 a minute into the quarter. The Warriors came roaring back to tie the game with goals from Matthew Rougeot (12:14) and Tyler Koppy (10:08). Parker took a feed from Mauceri and gave the Beacons their last lead of the game with 8:46 to go in the quarter. Eastern tied the game on a man-up goal with three minutes left in the second and took the lead for good on Wyllie's goal with 2:09 left. UMass Boston's defense came up huge at the end of the quarter, as they killed off a two-minute locked in penalty to keep the deficit at one goal. The Warriors put the game way with two goals in a 59-second span of the third quarter. They tacked on two more goals in the fourth for the final 8-3 margin. BY THE NUMBERS The Beacons recorded a season-low 12 shots on goal and turned the ball over 23 times in the loss. With the win, Eastern Connecticut State improved to 25-0 all-time against the Beacons. The Beacons have been close in each of the past five meetings, dropping all five games by seven goals or fewer. Senior Jack Dillon (Barrington, Mass.) paced the Beacons with six ground balls and a season-high five caused turnovers. Jack Fournier (West Newbury, Mass.) and Kroy Arnold (Syracuse, N.Y.) had four ground balls apiece. The two teams split the face-offs on the day (7-7), with Tom Redmond (Scituate, Mass.) leading the way for UMass Boston by going 3-4. WHO'S NEXT UMass Boston will travel to take on intra-state rival UMass Dartmouth on Wednesday at 7 p.m. Facebook
