The Georgian Court University title defense is officially underway as the Lions cinched up the second-seed in next week's Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Men's Lacrosse Championship Tournament with a 15-10 road win Saturday at Dominican College.
The reigning CACC champions will take on either these same Chargers or Wilmington University Thursday at 3:00 p.m. in the semifinal round of the tournament (hosted by Georgian Court). Chestnut Hill College has earned the #1 overall seed.
A Randy Collins goal at 8:18 of the first period provided GCU with an early 3-1 advantage. The two squads alternated the subsequent six goals to make the score 6-4 Lions before the road team rattled off an unanswered pair to go ahead 8-4 with 4:24 remaining before intermission.
Coming out of the break trailing 10-6, the host-Chargers collected the first three tallies of the third, inching to within a pair (11-9) at the 2:35 mark of the frame. Dominican would get no closer as the Lions countered by outscoring DC 4-1 in the fourth to secure their eighth win of the year (8-8, 4-1 CACC).
Nine different Lions found the back of the net in the triumph, paced by Tanner Lee with his team-high four goals (five points). The aforementioned Collins registered a hat trick for GCU. Michael Ventresca poured in two tallies while P.J. Saracino added a goal and three helpers.
Austin Geissel, who opened the year with a season-high 28 saves (2/16 @ SNHU), closed the regular-season campaign with his second-highest total of 26 denials in Saturday's triumph. The victory pushes the junior's goalkeeping record to 9-7 overall.
Despite the outcome, the Chargers (3-11, 2-3 CACC) out-shot GCU by a 60-45 margin (36-30 shots-on-goal).
