NEWBERRY – Newerry men's lacrosse was able to pull away in the second half against Emmanuel, coming away with a 22-13 win Wednesday evening at Setzler Field. The Wolves (4-0, 0-0 SAC) were led offensively by Dylan Mansur who had 10 points including his conference record-breaking eight goals. His eight goals tie his teammate Brady Kearnan for most ever in the South Atlantic Conference. Stone Boone had seven points (five goals, two assists) while Kearnan finished with five points (two goals, three assists). Zachary Sunderland and Jeremy Ross had two goals each while Neil Swingruer, Cole Bates and Zach Healy added the others. Sunderland, Swingruber and Daytin Vidovich also added two assists each. Ross, Kyle Dunklee, TJ Pratt and Belton Bryan added the other assists with one each. Newberry fell behind quickly as Shamaz Durrant got the scoring going for Emmanuel just under two minutes in the game. The Wolves would weather the fire, scoring five straight goals. During the run, Mansur got two goals while Sunderland, Boone and Kearnan added the others. The Lions halted the run by scoring two of their own to make it 5-3 in the early going of the second quarter. Boone and Mansur tacked on two more goals for the Wolves in the second, stretching their lead to 7-3 with 11:52 to go before halftime. Emmanuel was able to get some scoring going for them in the later stages of the second, cutting the deficit to 8-6. Newberry was able to get a sizeable lead before halftime as Boone added two more goals while Mansur tacked on one more. The Wolves would take a commanding 11-6 lead into the half. Newberry had a lead as big of nine in the third quarter while having the largest lead coming in the fourth quarter as Ross made it 20-10 with 12:37 left in the game. Justin Messersmith was phenomenal in the face-off circle once again, winning 18-of-24 face-offs attempted. Jacob Katopol went 6-of-8 in the face-off circle. Messersmith grabbed nine ground balls while Mansur, Boone and Dunklee grabbed five each. The Wolves as a team grabbed 58 ground balls. The Wolves were efficient in their man-up opportunities, scoring five times on eight attempts. Erick Szurley got the win in net, making nine saves of 20 shots faced in 53:39. Colton Clingan made three saves on four shots faced in 5:46. Owen Latchford went the rest of the way for the Wolves, making one save on two shots faced. During Wednesday's game, the Newberry men's lacrosse team dawned customized jersey with names of people who have battled cancer during their "Fighting Together" game. In a pregame ceremony, the Wolves honored those who have defeated the battle against cancer. During halftime, the team recognized Glaydean Lee and Mitzi Kirsch for their work with the Cancer Association of Spartanburg & Cherokee Counties. The Wolves will hit the road this Saturday as they take on Alderson Broaddus at 1 p.m.
