COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The University of Michigan men's lacrosse team fell to No. 15-ranked Ohio State, 13-10, on Sunday (March 14) at Ohio Stadium. Freshman Michael Boehm (three goals, one assist) and sophomore Josh Zawada (three goals) led the Wolverines offensively in the defeat.
Michigan (0-4, 0-4 Big Ten) fell behind, 2-0, in the early going, but Zawada cut the lead in half at the 10:33 mark. OSU went on a 3-0 run to make the advantage 4-1 and increased to 5-1 with 8:51 to go in the second quarter.
Zawada put an end to the run with his second of the contest, but OSU answered back nearly 40 seconds later to bring their lead to 6-2. U-M then went on a 3-0 run to close the half, keyed by a pair of hustle goals from Boehm and a marker from junior Bryce Clay to cut the Buckeye advantage to 6-5 at the half.
The Wolverines faltered coming out of the break, surrendering three straight goals to give the Buckeyes a 9-5 lead with 12:10 to go in the third quarter. Freshman Kyle Stephenson cashed in on a shot from the left wing at 6:46 to make the score 9-6 on the final goal of the quarter.
Trailing by a trio heading into the fourth quarter, Ohio State's Jack Myers added a score at 11:14 to run the score to 10-6, but Boehm went on to add his third goal of the contest with 8:44 to play to cut the OSU lead to 10-7. Following another Buckeyes, graduate student Avery Myers made it 11-8 on a feed from senior Alex Buckanavage before another Ohio State score brought the count to 12-8. U-M crept within two scores following Zawada's third (2:40) and Clay's second (:28), but time ran out on the rally.
Junior goalie John Kiracofe made a career-high 11 saves, while classmate Nick Rowlett went 13-of-26 at the faceoff dot with 10 ground balls.
