VERONA, Wis. – The Edgewood College Men's Lacrosse team began its 2022 season on Wednesday night with a home game against Cornell College at Edgewood College Field at Reddan Park. The visiting Rams scored five unanswered to end the game in defeating the Eagles, 9-4, in season opener.
RAMS 9, EAGLES 4
- The Eagles (0-1) looked like a much-improved team in year two in the season opener, especially in their defensive effort against the Rams (2-1). Nine goals is the fewest Edgewood College has allowed in their young program history and freshman Luke Quakenbush played a big role in that effort with 11 saves in his first collegiate action.
- After falling behind 2-0 in the first two minutes of play, Edgewood College answered with two goals. Blake Stockwell scored the Eagles first goal of the season with 12:38 left in the opening quarter and his brother Tyler Stockwell provided his first career goal with 11:18 left. Tyler Stockwell's goal came in a man down situation.
- The two teams traded the next four goals with the Eagles scores coming from Dylan Oas (12:35, second quarter) and Avery Bugaj (6:37, second quarter). Bugaj's goal was scored with a man down and tied the game at 4-4. Unfortunately, Cornell responded with two goals before the half to take a 6-4 lead into the break. Kyle Jussila scored both of those goals and finished with five of the Rams six first-half scores.
- Only three goals were scored in the second half, but all three came from John Linderman of Cornell. He scored once midway through the third quarter and added two fourth-quarter scores to make the final 9-4.
- The Eagles struggled staying out of the box in the first half, committing seven penalties, but they cleaned things up in the second half with just three.
- Nick Fiske and Alex Kimmel each caused two turnovers, while Quakenbush led the team with five groundballs. The Eagles won 7-of-17 faceoffs with Ryder Patano going 4-for-9 and Grant Mikesell going 3-of-8.
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
- The Eagles are now 0-2 in season openers, but both openers have been close contests. Last year, Edgewood College fell 10-9 in double overtime against Mount St. Joseph.
UP NEXT
- Speaking of Mount St. Joseph, that is who will be next on the Eagles schedule. They continue a three-game home stretch to start the season by hosting the Lions in a non-conference game on Saturday at 11 a.m.
