Trailing by a goal with 14 seconds left, Taylor Blenckstone scored a clutch goal to tie the game at 10-10. However, Alana Greene's overtime winner lifted George Washington to an 11-10 on Saturday evening at Elizabeth Burger Jackson Field. Longwood's defense turned in a season-best performance, allowing a season low 11 goals while causing 12 turnovers and scooping 17 ground balls. Defender Lauren Cerretani led the charge for the Lancer back line, securing six ground balls and causing three turnovers. Teammates Hannah Tirrell and Rachel Abraham each added three caused turnovers of their own, while combining for four ground balls and lead the team to an 18-20 mark on clear attempts. However, the balanced George Washington (3-1) attack found just enough offense on Saturday, as seven Colonials tallied goals. Leading the charge was Ioanna Mantzouratos, who tallied a hat trick with four points, while Amber Germer and Caitie Perkins each added a pair. George Washington also held a 17-6 edge in draw controls, led by Abby Carlin's seven. The Colonials big day on the draw included the start of overtime, where Caitie Perkins secured her fifth of the day to lead to Greene's golden goal. "No doubt about it, that was a tough game to lose after battling to tie it in the final seconds and take it to overtime," said Longwood head coach Elaine Jones. "We did a lot of really nice things both on offense and defense, but in the end, George Washington's ability to consistently get the draw was the difference and gave them the slight edge they needed to win the game." Longwood's offense notched goals from six players, including multiple goal performances from Blenckstone, Emma Johnson, Emily Smith, and Haley Moomau. The Lancers racked up 24 total shots, with 17 on net as Colonial goalkeeper Megan Patrick made seven saves. After falling behind 2-0, Longwood used an early 4-0 run to take a 4-2 lead at the 15:00 minute mark. Johnson scored two goals during that 9:08 stretch, as the Lancer defense slowed down the George Washington attack. Their lead would hold until halftime, as the Lancers led 5-4 at the break. The second half was played just as close as the opening 30 minutes, as neither team took a lead larger than two goals the entire contest. With the Lancers leading 7-5, George Washington went on a 4-1 run over the next 10:18 to take the lead, 9-8 with 9:20 remaining. Emily Cate Smith responded just under two minutes later, knotting the game again at 9-9. After Longwood goalkeeper Kylee Wright denied Amber Germer's free position shot, Caitie Perkins got to the loose ball, throwing a shoot over her back and into the Lancer net to surge George Washington back in front, 10-9. Still trailing by a goal with 29 second left, Jones used a timeout to set up the Lancer offense. Longwood delivered out of the pause, as Smith feed a pass from behind the goal to Blenckstone, who buried a shot to tie the game in the waning seconds and force overtime. However, after Perkins hauled in the draw control for George Washington and the Colonials called a timeout, Greene scored on the lone shot of overtime as George Washington escaped with an 11-10 win. The Lancer home stand continues on Thursday, March 18 when they host Delaware State. Originally scheduled as their season opener but postponed to due inclement weather, the opening draw is set for 4 p.m.
