The Illinois Wesleyan University men's lacrosse team pushed its win streak to three in-a-row with a 24-11 toppling of Alma College Saturday afternoon, Feb. 29, at Tucci Stadium. The win moved the Titans to 3-1 on the season, while the Scots slipped to 1-3 on the year.
Sophomore Rick Smith (Frankfort, Ill.-Lincoln Way East) led the scoring for IWU, finishing with five goals and three assists. Junior Tanner Nelson (Hatfield, Pa.-North Penn) added a season-high four goals and senior Ben Arends (Edwards, Ill.-Dunlap) net a hat trick. Freshmen Carson Kiichle (Vancouver, Wash.-Skyview) and Connor Kiichle (Vancouver, Wash.-Skyview) tallied two goals apiece, while eight other Titans scored.
In goal, Will Harris (Bloomington, Minn.-Holy Angels) made nine saves and senior Benigno Houser (Hilliard, Ohio-St. Charles Prep) added five.
The Titans controlled nearly every facet of the game, including shots (66-37), ground balls (38-26), and face offs (27-12). Alma turned it over 26 times, while Illinois Wesleyan committed 22.
IWU got out to a 5-2 lead in the opening period, with Smith kicking the game off with a hat trick in the first 15 minutes of play.
In the second quarter, the Titans went ahead by seven before the Scots scored three unanswered. A goal by Smith pushed Illinois Wesleyan's advantage to five, 10-5, at the break.
IWU maintained control into the second half, outscoring Alma 14-6 over the final 30 minutes to wrap up the 24-11 victory.
The Titans finish up a three-game homestand Tuesday night, March 3, against John Carroll at 6 p.m. inside Tucci Stadium.
