The University of Montevallo men's lacrosse team fell to the Westminster College Griffins 11-10 in double overtime in its season opener Feb. 1. Sophomore Thomas Vaesen scored four goals and recorded one assist in the match. Sophomore Alex Dozzi and freshman Jackson Neufeld recorded two goals each, while sophomore Kordell Primus and freshman Andru Ross scored one goal each. Sophomore Kyle Little registered 23 saves in the contest, finishing just two shy of his career high, while playing all 60 minutes in goal. KEY GOALS 1st, 8:27 | After falling behind 4-0 early, sophomore Kordell Primus scored unassisted to start a three-goal run by the Falcons. 1st, 2:01 | Sophomore Alex Dozzi scored the second goal of the match with the Falcons playing a man up off an assist from freshman Jackson Neufeld to cut Westminster's lead to 4-2. 2nd, 14:47 | Dozzi again found the back of the net to continue a scoring run and get Montevallo within one goal of the Griffins, 4-3, off an assist from freshman Andru Ross on another man-up situation. 2nd, 6:46 | Down 6-4, the Falcons went on another three-goal scoring run, started by sophomore Thomas Vaesen with his unassisted goal. 2nd, 4:11 | Nuefeld tied the game up at 6-6 after scoring off of an assist from Vaesen. 2nd, 1:41 | Vaesen scored unassisted for his third goal in the match and gave the Falcons their first lead of the night at 7-6. 3rd, 8:51 | After a game-tying goal by Westminster, Vaesen answered and scored unassisted for his fourth goal of the game to give Montevallo a 8-7 lead. 4th, 10:55 | With the Falcons down two goals, Neufeld scored his second goal of the game to trim the Westminster lead to 10-9. 4th, 9:25 | Ross scored his first goal as a Falcon, tying the match at 10-10 and forcing overtime. 2OT, 2:22 | Blake Gross scored the game-winning goal for Westminster in double overtime off an assist from Jacob Taylor. GAME NOTES Westminster outshot Montevallo 49-34 in the contest, including a 35-22 edge in shots on goal. The Falcons forced 22 turnovers by the Griffins and recorded 40 ground balls. Montevallo converted 2-of-6 extra-man opportunities, while Westminster finished 1-of-4 in man-up situations. The Griffons won the face-off battle 13-11 in the match. UP NEXT The Falcons will return to action Saturday, Feb. 9 when they host Mars Hill University in a 1 p.m. contest.
