Hempstead, NY – Senior Josh Byrne scored both of his goals in the fourth quarter and added two assists and freshman Ryan Tierney added two goals and one assists to lead the seventh-ranked Pride of Hofstra to a 9-6 victory over the Red Storm of St. John's at James M. Shuart Stadium Saturday night. The Pride, ranked seventh in the coaches poll and fifth in the media poll, extended their school record streak from the start of the season to 8-0 while the Red Storm drop to 1-7 on the year. Byrne, the Tewaaraton Award watch list selection, assisted on goals on junior Alex Moeser and Tierney in the first quarter before adding his two goals in the fourth that gave the Pride some breathing room. Tierney scored in the first and the third quarters to give him 18 on the season. Moeser also added two goals giving him 10 on the year while junior Dylan Alderman added one goals and two assists for the Pride. Junior goalie Jack Concannon made five saves to post his eighth win of the year. St. John's was led by junior Jason DeBenedictis with two goals and two assists while senior Nick Heller also tallied two goals. Senior Scott Scannell added one goal and one assist. Junior Daniel Costa made seven saves in the Red Storm goal in the loss. The Red Storm got on the board first just 1:19 into the contest as Heller scored off a pass from t goals as DeBenedictis for a 1-0 lead. Hofstra answered with three straight goals as Kavanagh scored an unassisted tally, Moeser added a man-up goal from Byrne, and Tierney scored from Byrne to give the Pride a 3-1 lead after one quarter. The Red Storm opened the second quarter with goals by Heller, his second of the day, and DeBenedictis to tie the game at 3-3 with 6:23 to play in the half. But the Pride responded with goals by Moeser, his second of the day, and Alderman on the man-up in the final 1:37 to take a 5-3 at halftime. The Red Storm outshot the Pride, 14-10 in the first half with all 10 Pride shots going on goal. For the third consecutive quarter, St. John's opened with the first goal of the period as sophomore Declan Swartwood dented the twine to close the deficit to 5-4 with 7:01 to play in the third quarter. But Hofstra replied with goals by Tierney, his second of the night and 14th of the season, and sophomore Jimmy Yanes, his eighth of the year, just 1:24 apart, to open up a 7-4 lead after three periods. Byrne opened the final quarter with his team-leading 22nd goal of the year just 3:40 into the period to boost the Pride lead to 8-4. St. John's answered with goals by Scannell midway through the period and DeBenedictis' second with 4:33 to play to close the gap to 8-6. But Byrne added an insurance goal with 27 seconds remaining with the Red Storm in a full-field ride to post the final 9-6 score.
