The Yale women's lacrosse team was less than 20 minutes away from pulling off another win over a ranked team Tuesday afternoon, leading No. 3 BC 7-6 after a goal by sophomore midfielder Barrett Carlson. But BC went on a 3-0 run, then answered with four more goals after the Bulldogs tied the score 9-9. The Yale defense held the Eagles to 13 goals -- tied for their season-low -- but BC still came away with a 13-9 win. Yale (6-2, 2-0 Ivy League) -- which had already beaten Albany and UMass at Reese when those two were ranked -- controlled the pace of the game early on. The Bulldogs held a 4-3 lead at halftime thanks to goals from junior attacker Izzy Nixon (two, including one assisted by first-year midfielder Sam Higgins), sophomore midfielder Vanessa Yu and senior midfielder Emily Granger. They also had a 5-3 advantage on draws. BC (11-0, 2-0 ACC) reversed that draw control advantage, claiming 9 of 16 draws in the second half, and that enabled the Eagles to put together some game-changing runs. After a pair of goals by senior midfielder Madeleine Gramigna, including one assisted by Higgins, Yale's lead was 6-4 with 23:04 to play. BC scored a pair to tie it, but Carlson got the lead back for Yale. The Bulldog defense forced BC into a shot clock violation shortly after that, but the Eagles regrouped quickly as a turnover enabled attacker Sam Apuzzo to tie the game 7-7. That was the first of three straight goals for her, including a spectacular behind-the-back shot with 14:45 left that made the score 9-7. Yale rallied with goals from first-year midfielder Olivia Markert and Yu, tying the game 9-9 with 12:28 to play. Shortly after a yellow card on the Bulldogs, senior goalie Sydney Marks came up with a big save to keep the game tied. But BC took eventually took advantage of the man-up situation and midfielder Dempsey Arsenault scored the go-ahead goal at 7:39. Arsenault scored again at 6:53, working a give-and-go with Apuzzo to perfection. Two more goals in the final 5:34 made the final 13-9. The only other teams to hold BC to 13 goals were nationally ranked: then-No. 12 USC and then-No. 15 Notre Dame. Marks finished with nine saves, while Lauren Daly made 13 for BC. Sophomore defender Margaret Stover led Yale with three caused turnovers. Yale resumes Ivy League play Saturday at No. 21 Cornell. Report by Sam Rubin '95 (sam.rubin@yale.edu), Yale Sports Publicity
