Sam Apuzzo scored three of her four goals in the second half – including the game-winning goal – and led the No. 2 Boston College lacrosse team to a 9-7 win over No. 13 Virginia Tech on Saturday afternoon at the Newton Campus Fields. With the win, Boston College clinched at least a share of the 2018 ACC regular-season title – the program's first – and has a chance to win the crown outright next Thursday when the Eagles wrap up the regular season against Syracuse. A defensive slugfest on both sides of the field, the Eagles took a 5-2 lead into the intermission. BC used three free position goals to build the lead as Apuzzo and Dempsey Arsenault netted goals five minutes apart down the stretch to extend the Eagles' lead from 3-2 to 5-2. In the second half, Virginia Tech (11-5, 4-2 ACC) scored three of the first four goals of the period, cutting BC's lead to 6-5. After Apuzzo re-claimed the Eagles a two-goal lead, the Hokies again rallied and tied the score at 7-7. Apuzzo's strike gave the Eagles the lead for good at 8-7 and Emma Schurr netted the insurance goal with 43 seconds left to secure the win. Lauren Daly made four saves as BC out-shot the Hokies 26-15 in the game. Virginia Tech's Meagh Graham stopped eight BC shots in the loss. The Eagles forced five turnovers in that streak before Emma Schurr tallied the insurance goal with under a minute left to play. HOW IT HAPPENED After Virginia Tech netted the game's first goal just over three minutes into the game, BC scored three straight goals – two from Kaileen Hart and one from Tess Chandler – to take a 3-1 lead with 16:06 to go. Paige Petty's first goal of the day snapped VTech's scoreless streak at 10:51 and cut the Eagles' lead to one goal, but the Eagles defense again buckled down and held the Hokies scoreless the rest of the half while Dempsey Arsenault converted the Eagles' third free position goal of the day and Sam Apuzzo broke through for her first score of the afternoon Coming out of the half, Virginia Tech scored three of the stanza's first four goals, pulling within one at 6-5 with 18:44 left to play Apuzzo's third of the day 40 seconds later re-claimed the BC two-goal advantage, but Virginia Tech used goals by Petty at 17:20 and Taylor Caskey at 14:59 – while winning back-to-back draw controls – to pull even at 7-7 with half the period left Apuzzo won the next draw and then claimed a ground ball off a saved shot to keep BC's possession before scoring the eventual game-winning goal on the reset She then won the next draw control again, setting up a back-and-forth 11-minute run between the teams that featured BC forcing VTech turnovers on five straight possessions Emma Schurr then wrapped up the game with the insurance goal, picking up a shoveled Arsenault pass with 43 seconds remaining. Elizabeth Miller won the resulting draw to seal the win.
