No. 2 and undefeated Boston College scored with one second remaining to defeat No. 16/19 Syracuse, 13-12, in women's lacrosse action on Thursday, April 19. "It was a hard-fought game," said Syracuse head coach Gary Gait. "It was the most energy we've had all year. Hopefully we can build on this effort for Sunday's game against Louisville and then into the ACC Tournament next week." HOW IT WAS DECIDED Boston College (17-0, 7-0) led by one at halftime and scored the first two goals of the second half to take a 10-7 lead. Senior Riley Donahue took advantage of an Eagles' yellow card with her 141st career goal before redshirt sophomore Mary Rahal netted back-to-back goals to even the score at 10-10. The teams traded goals before Rahal scored her career-high fourth of the day and freshman Sam Swart followed with her second of the contest to give Syracuse (8-8, 0-6) its first lead of the day, 12-11. The Eagles' Sam Apuzzo answered to tie the score for the third time in the second half. A Syracuse yellow card with 1:02 on the clock gave Boston College a free position, but the shot hit the post and Donahue picked up the ground ball. After a timeout, the Orange turned the ball over on the clear, giving Boston College the final possession of the game. Apuzzo took advantage, netting her fifth goal of the day for the game winner. The first half featured runs by both teams as neither squad could pull away. Boston College scored the first three goals of the game, but Syracuse answered with three straight to tie the game. Senior Neena Merola got around her defender and buried her shot to put the Orange on the scoreboard. sophomore Emily Hawryschuk and redshirt senior Taylor Gait followed with goals to even the score at 3-3. After the Eagles went up 7-3, Syracuse answered with four straight goals to again tie the game, this time at 7-7. Rahal recorded an unassisted goal at the 7:51 mark to start the scoring run. Swart and freshman Molly Carter followed with goals before Hawryschuk ended the run with her second goal of the day. However, Boston College scored with 21 seconds left to take a 7-6 halftime lead. OF NOTE Rahal led the Orange with four goals, while Swart and Hawryschuk had two goals apiece. In addition, sophomore Vanessa Costantino dished out a career-high three assists. Donahue had a goal and an assist and moved into a tie for seventh place with Michelle Tumolo (2010-13) on the school's all-time goals scored list with 141. Sophomore goalkeeper Asa Goldstock made 12 saves in the loss. It marked the eighth time this season and 12th in her career that she has reached double figures in saves. UP NEXT… Syracuse closes out the regular season on Sunday, April 22 against Louisville in the Carrier Dome at 1 p.m. Fans should arrive early for a pregame ceremony honoring the Orange's senior class. Admission and parking are free.
